Deborra-Lee Furness, Hugh Jackman’s ex-wife, once made a playful comment about their marriage that caught attention. The two were married for 27 years before separating in 2023. In a 2013 interview, Furness explained that being with Jackman felt like she was “always having affairs,” a remark that stemmed from her husband’s changing appearance due to his various roles in film. Despite the lighthearted nature of her comment, it revealed the fun and unique bond the couple shared throughout their long relationship.
The pair first met in 1995 while working on the Australian TV series Corelli, where their chemistry was instant. Their marriage was built on mutual respect and admiration, and they often spoke of their strong connection and how they supported one another through the ups and downs of their careers. They stayed married for nearly three decades before announcing their separation in 2023.
In their joint statement, Jackman and Furness said: “We have been blessed to share almost three decades together as husband and wife in a wonderful, loving marriage. Our journey now is shifting and we have decided to separate to pursue our individual growth.”
They went on to emphasize that their family was always their top priority: “We undertake this next chapter with gratitude, love, and kindness. We greatly appreciate your understanding in respecting our privacy as our family navigates this transition in all of our lives.”
Their statement reflected the dignity with which they handled the end of their marriage, focusing on love and respect.
Keeping their bond fresh
In the same 2013 interview with Town & Country magazine, Furness spoke about her affection for Jackman, even as his look changed with every role.
When asked if she preferred Jackman’s signature beard, she said, “I do. But I like him clean-shaven.” She added: “But I like him all ways: chubby, muscley, skinny. I’m always having affairs… Don’t make that headline!”
Her comment jokingly hinted at how Jackman’s various looks made it feel like she was with a new person each time, which kept things exciting for her.
While this playful remark shed light on their relationship, it also spoke to the couple’s ability to keep things lighthearted, even in the face of Jackman’s demanding career. They remained dedicated to each other throughout their time together, and despite their separation, the mutual respect they shared was evident in their public statements.
Jackman’s new chapter
Since the split, Jackman has seemingly moved on, with reports confirming his new relationship with Broadway star Sutton Foster.
The pair, who co-starred in the 2022 revival of The Music Man, were seen holding hands and smiling together in Santa Monica in early January 2025.
Sutton, who has been open about her admiration for Jackman, called him “one of the greatest guys ever” and praised his work ethic.
