Kevin Bacon has discovered that he and Kyra Sedgwick, his wife of over three decades, are actually cousins.

Discovering that you are related to someone you know is mind-boggling enough, but what would you do if you found out you were distant cousins with your partner of 35 years?

That exact thing happened to the 65-year-old Footloose actor after he and his 58-year-old wife - and mother of his two children - appeared on the popular TV show, Finding Your Roots.

The documentary television series - which is hosted by Henry Louis Gates Jr. - uses traditional genealogical research (written records) and genetics (DNA testing) to discover the family history of famous stars.

In the episode, which was filmed in 2013, Bacon and Sedgwick were shown how their families are discreetly linked to pivotal moments in American history, including the Declaration of Independence and the battle to abolish slavery.

However, DNA analysis also revealed that the couple are connected to one another, as the presenter - who is a Harvard professor of African-American history - showed Sedgwick a picture of her ninth cousin once removed.

He then said: "And his name is Kevin Bacon," which prompted The Closer actress, who expressed a fear that the investigation would show that the couple were indeed related, to repeatedly exclaim: "See. I knew it!"

The host told Sedgwick not to disclose that she and her husband share some relatives as he would be appearing on the show two weeks later, however, she spilled the beans early, which was why the Leave The World Behind actor was not shocked when he found out.

After stumbling across his wife's picture in the photo album, Bacon said: "Ah, see I knew this! She told me," to which Gates Jr. quipped that the Brooklyn Nine-Nine star "cheated" because she was "so excited".

Bacon then shared that honesty is the reason why their marriage has thrived for decades, stating: "See this is why we are still married, because you can never tell her to not tell me something." However, he clarified that he was the one who asked about the ancestry results.

Thankfully, the couple has not let the shocking revelation deter them as last year they celebrated their 35th wedding anniversary, taking to their Instagram to mark the special occasion.

Bacon shared a loving throwback photo of himself and Sedgwick, in which he and the actress are cuddled up on a chair. He is also seen planting a kiss on Sedgwick's head as she smiles at the camera.

"35 years feels like a heartbeat. #Anniversary," the actor wrote in the caption. Meanwhile, the actress also shared a nostalgic photo of the pair on her page, writing in the caption: "It was 1987- on the set of 'Lemon Sky' - I met a man named Kevin. Happy 35 my love."

Sedgwick first met Bacon when she was 12 years old and went to see him perform in New York. However, the couple reunited decades later on the Lemon Sky set in 1988.

"I was knocked out," the Hollow Man star told PEOPLE of first meeting Sedgwick: "I thought she was amazing." But, it was not love at first sight for the both of them, as he added: "She wasn't really into it at first, I had to chip away at her."

Though The Game Plan actress revealed that she was not as immediately mesmerized as Bacon, she said that she knew he was the one for her after their first date. "I remember waking up and going, 'I feel like home.' I realized, 'Oh, that was him,'" she remarked.

The couple ended up getting engaged at the end of 1987 and eventually tied the knot on September 4, 1988. They share two adult children, Travis, 34, and Sosie, 31.
