Lizzo reveals why she waited until her 30s to lose her virginity
Best known for chart-topping hits 'About Damn Time' and 'Truth Hurts', Lizzo (real name Melissa Jefferson) apparently went to great lengths to disguise the fact that she was a virgin for years.
As a pop star, Lizzo’s draw to audiences was her authenticity - but it turns out that, all along, she was keeping a big secret.
Why did Lizzo wait until her 30s to lose her virginity?
Appearing as a guest on the Friends Keep Secrets podcast, Lizzo told its hosts Benny Blanco, Lil Dicky, and Kristin Batalucco that her vow of chastity was linked to a promise she’d made to her younger self.
“I promised myself when I was younger that I wouldn’t have sex until I won a Grammy,” Lizzo told them.
Lizzo won her first Grammy in 2020, following her big breakout year with her first album, Coz I Love You and the success of singles like 'Good As Hell' and 'Juice'.
Speaking on Friends Keep Secrets, Lizzo did confirm that she lost virginity following her Grammy haul, but it was “not on the night of the Grammys.”
Discussing keeping the secret, Lizzo admitted: “It was so embarrassing. I was in a friend group of girls. We were all girling one night and it was like, ‘Wait, Lizzo are you a virgin?’
“And I remember being like, ‘No!’” she continued. “I remember it was so embarrassing. I said, ‘I love the D!’ And it held me over for a little while.”
She was nominated for a number of awards at the 2020 Grammy’s, including Best New Arist, Record of the Year ('Truth Hurts'), Album of the Year (Cuz I Love You) and Song of the Year ('Truth Hurts').
The night ended in Lizzo taking home three Grammys, Best Pop Solo Performance ('Truth Hurts'), Best Urban Contemporary Album (Cuz I Love You) and Best Traditional R&B Performance ('Jerome').
What is Lizzo’s love life like now?
Since her Grammys win, it’s been up and up for the singer. She’s been in a committed relationship with Myke Wright since 2022. The couple first met in 2016, as co-hosts of the short-lived MTV music show Wonderland.
Lizzo released her fourth album, Special, in 2022, which included hit singles 'About Damn Time' and 'Am I Ready (2 Be Loved)'. Following some personal and professional struggles, Lizzo’s third mixtape, My Face Smiles From Hurting, dropped last year but didn’t meet the commercial success of her previous work.
