While many fans wish they could be the lucky woman in Keanu Reeves’ life, it is artist Alexandra Grant who has been dating the Matrix star since 2019.
Fans of the 58-year-old actor were overjoyed when the two made their debut as a couple on the LACMA Art and Film Gala red carpet in 2019 - especially knowing the heartache Reeves had suffered in his past.
In fact, it became so much for Reeves, who eventually isolated himself in hotels while dealing with his grief.
Reeves’ relationship with his family while growing up was difficult. His father, Samuel Reeves Jr, abandoned his wife and son just three years after Reeves was born.
The actor rarely talks about his dad, but did once touch on the matter in a Rolling Stones interview back in 2000. When asked if he had a relationship with his father at the time, the actor said he did not.
"The story with me and my dad's pretty heavy," Reeves told the publication. "It’s full of pain and woe and f***ing loss and all that s***."
Reeves’ personal struggles don’t end there, sadly. His sister, Kim Reeves, was diagnosed with leukemia in 1991. The star took time out of his career to be her primary caregiver according to The Mirror.
Showing how close the two were, Reeves’ sister told PEOPLE: "My brother is my prince. He listens to every word, to every comma after every word, that you are saying."
Around the time that Reeves started dating actress Jennifer Syme, his sister went into remission. Reeves would later set up a cancer charity, but detached his name from it.
Reeves and Syme had met at a party in 1998, celebrating his band, Dog Honor. They quickly fell in love and Syme found out she was pregnant.
Tragically though, during the eighth month of her pregnancy, Syme found out their child had died in the womb. The child, who the couple had named Ava Syme Reeves, was stillborn in December 1999.
Following the death of their child, Reeves and Syme’s relationship deteriorated and the couple split in 2000.
Then, in another awful turn of events, Syme died suddenly in a car crash on April 2, 2001, after returning home from a party thrown by musician Marilyn Manson. The actress was just 28 years old.
Opening up about the loss of his ex-girlfriend and child in an interview with Parade magazine in 2006, per The Mirror, Reeves said: “I miss being a part of their lives and them being part of mine. I wonder what the present would be like if they were here - what we might have done together. I miss all the great things that will never be.”
Reeves’ grief was so crushing that he decided to leave mainstream life behind and isolate himself - choosing to live hotels and living out of one suitcase.
“Sounds quite bohemian and gypsy-like, doesn't it?” Reeves said about his lifestyle during an interview with Roger Ebert.
The Mirror reports that Reeves spent four years "calling Los Angeles' Châteaux Marmont home." In fact, during a Reddit thread, a cleaner who allegedly worked at one of the hotels revealed that Reeves used to watch Spongebob Squarepants on a loop.
The beloved actor would often say in interviews that he would stay in hotels as that's where he spent most of his time while filming movies anyway - and therefore saw no need for a permanent home.
However, the actor’s nomadic days seem to have come to an end now, with the introduction of Reeves’ new partner Alexandra Grant. The two have reportedly been friends since 2011, when the artist first illustrated one of Reeves’ books, Ode to Happiness, according to ELLE.
Reeves and Grant have now officially been dating since 2019, although they try to keep a low profile about their relationship.
Fans of the actor are happy that Reeves has finally found peace and happiness in his relationship after his traumatic past.
