Elon Musk is questioning his purchase of Twitter, stating: "If I'm so smart, why did I pay so much for it?"

It seems like a fair question to ask, considering the staggering amount that the billionaire paid for the social media site last year.

Musk, 51, completed the purchase on October 27 last year, for the sum of $44 billion - and his journey with the platform since hasn't exactly been smooth sailing.

In November last year, he reportedly sent his new employees a list of rules of "insane productivity" - all while removing the board of directors and laying off at least 3,700 staff.

His acquisition of the site meant that previously banned figures such as Donald Trump and Kanye West had their accounts restored, although the latter was later banned again after he made anti-Semitic comments.

On top of this, a variety of celebrities declared that they were leaving the platform, especially since Musk began charging people for a coveted blue tick, which sparked concerns about identity fraud.

Musk himself has since admitted that the price he paid for the site was on the high end, especially because when it comes to money-making, Twitter isn't the most lucrative.

The SpaceX owner took part in the VivaTech conference in Paris on June 16, where he opened up about his purchase and even poked fun at himself.

Musk, presumably quite an intelligent man, or at the very least a very talented businessman, posed a simple yet effective to the audience: "If I'm so smart, why did I pay so much for Twitter then?"

As reported by Business Insider, the tech mogul claimed that he purchased the platform for the "expensive" price because he was worried about the direction it was taking under its old ownership.

"I was concerned Twitter was having a negative effect on civilization and corrosive effect on civil society, and anything that undermines civilization, I think, isn't good," he continued.

Musk went on: "I felt Twitter kept moving in a negative direction, and my hope and aspiration was for it to be a positive force for civilization."

Despite receiving backlash since he took over Twitter, the South African-born billionaire clearly thinks that he's done a good job in the months that have followed.

"I think if someone is a regular Twitter user, then most people would say their experience has improved," Musk said. "We've gotten rid of 90% of bots and scams and various bad things happening. We've gotten rid of 95% of child exploitation material on Twitter, which was a shock to see... some of what was going on for 10 years."

$44 billion might seem like an impossible amount of money to us mere mortals, but according to Forbes, Musk has a net worth of $236.9 billion, so he has some cash to burn.

He's certainly made an impact on social media in his short time in charge.
