Jennifer Carpenter has confirmed that she will be returning as Debra in the upcoming reboot of Dexter.

According to TV Line, the 41-year-old actress confirmed that she will be joining the cast of the serial-killer drama, entitled Dexter: New Blood, at a recent Q&A at the Television Critics Association summer press tour.

Per the above publication, Carpenter claimed that her character, who was infamously killed off in the eighth season of the show back in 2013, would be appearing in the form of hallucinatory vignettes, stating: "I don't think of her as a ghost, more of a link, or an echo, or an inconvenient truth for Dexter.

"[She] comes back to sort of haunt and punish and caretake and provoke and love [him]."

Meanwhile, at the same event, lead actor Michael C. Hall spoke about the experience of the cast reunion, saying: "As much as [Deb] is an internalized character for Dexter, I think [she] represents how far he's fallen without a compass.

"I was so excited about Jennifer doing this because I knew she would be able to shapeshift and come at Dexter from so many different places. And, of course, she did.

"It was really fun to crack open our sense of internal landscape because it's much more pyrotechnic and crazy than it used to be."

The upcoming miniseries will see Dexter living under an alias in rural upstate New York after fleeing Miami. The character has now opened up a firearms/hunting store and seems to be subsiding peacefully.

However, despite attending therapy, he still struggles to contain his own murderous urges, and when his past starts to catch up with him, paranoia provokes him into relapsing into his deadly habits once more.

Clyde Phillips, who served as showrunner from seasons one to four, ending his tenure with the iconic Trinity Killer storyline, is also returning to helm the revival series alongside Carpenter and Hall.

Per NME, Philips previously spoke about the revival in an interview during the show's Comic-Con@Home panel, stating: "One of the things that Michael insisted on, and he was completely right, was that this not be Dexter season nine.

"This is not the next moment after the lumberjack moment. We pick up with Dexter in another place, in another world, actually, as far away from Miami as possible."

Dexter: New Blood will premiere on November 7, 2021, on Showtime.
