Following a six-month hiatus from Twitter, legendary children's author JK Rowling has given her dedicated fanbase something to look forward to.

Yesterday, Rowling shared a mysterious and cryptic tweet about Harry Potter And The Cursed Child, leading a number of fans to wonder whether the West End play would be turned into a feature film.

As far as dedicated fans go, this woman has memorised the entire Harry Potter series word for word:

Rowling tweeted an image of an outline of the face of a sinister-looking figure, writing: "Sometimes, darkness comes from unexpected places #HarryPotter #CursedChild".

It goes without saying, but fans of the much-loved children's author were thrilled by what they saw as Rowling teasing a brand new Harry Potter project.

"Oh My God, Please say the famous trio is returning, Please say it, JK." one enthused user tweeted.

"Dont fc*k with us ? is he coming back? [sic]" added another.

Others remained confused as to what Rowling's mysterious tweet actually meant.

"I’m desperately trying to figure out what this could mean," wrote one, while another agreed: "I’m sure there’s a message here, but I’m not entirely sure what it is."

"Btw, I’m extremely curious what this could mean. Does it have anything to do with the rumor of Warner Brothers wanting to buy the rights to Cursed Child?" added a third.

Interestingly, some fans weren't quite as excited about a potential update on the Cursed Child.

"I'm sorry JK," one tweeted. "But if you are gonna do this, please change the story. The Cursed Child play really does feel like bad fan fiction - Voldemort having a child, Diggory becoming a death eater. Please, I'm begging you.

Another Twitter user simply wrote: "Please...no more cursed child."

Who knows what's in the pipeline for Rowling's fictional wizarding world? I guess we'll find out in due course.
