In August last year, The Matrix 4 was officially confirmed, with Keanu Reeves set to reprise his role as futuristic hero Neo, Variety reported at the time.

Lana Wachowski will be writing (alongside Aleksandar Hemon and David Mitchell) and directing the fourth instalment of the franchise. The 54-year-old filmmaker is also producing with Australian film producer Grant Hill.

All three of the existing films - The Matrix, The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions - were written and directed by Lana and her sister, Lilly.
