Couples who plan to get married warned not to watch 'unsettling' new Netflix series
Couples who are planning to get married have been warned not to watch an "unsettling" new series on Netflix.
The streaming giant added the new show, Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen, which is produced by the Duffer Brothers and created by Haley Z. Boston.
The eight-part series follows bride-to-be Rachel (Camila Morrone) and her husband-to-be Nicky (Adam DiMarco) as they prepare for their big day at his isolated family cabin.
The story is set in the days leading up to the ceremony.
It begins with a flashforward hinting at a gory outcome, then it rewinds to show how things unravel.
As strange events begin to stack up, Rachel becomes convinced that something terrible is about to happen.
Her paranoia is triggered by bizarre coincidences, a haunting sense of déjà vu about the cabin, and an overwhelming feeling of worry that refuses to go away.
The director opened up about the inspiration behind the show, telling Tudum: "When I was a kid, my mom said to me, 'You just need to make sure you don’t marry the wrong person.'
"The show is about the fear of marrying the wrong person."
"I’ve been to weddings where people say in their vows, 'I never once had a doubt,' I hear that, and I’m like, 'That’s crazy. What do you mean?'" she added.
Why Couples Are Being Warned
While wedding nerves are nothing new, this show turns that anxiety into full horror.
Boston said she didn't rely on jump scares.
Instead, she focused on slow-building tension and character-driven storytelling to create what has been described as an "unsettling, getting-under-your-skin dread".
"I think horror allows you to explore taboo feelings and take all of these fears and give them some bite,” she said. "My natural approach is from a place of character and dialogue and humor and then infusing that with unsettling horror… I’m like, 'I want to be unsettled. I want to be freaked out.'"
Critics have warned that the show’s themes could leave couples questioning their own relationships.
Alex Maidy wrote: "If Jaws made people scared of the water, Something Very Bad Is Going To Happen is going to scare the sh*t out of anyone thinking about getting married."
He added: "If you are engaged to be married, this series is going to give you some serious pause, and everyone in a committed relationship may think twice about even considering tying the knot."
Viewer Reactions On Social Media
Despite the warnings, audiences are already binge-watching the series, with many commending its storytelling and originality.
One viewer wrote: "Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen had me up all night binging all 8 episodes.
"Stylishly haunting and filled with a coldness from its beautiful location, the show had me intrigued from episode one. The dread is palpable, yet stunning to look at."
Another commented: "Binged 'Something Very Bad Is Going To Happen' on Netflix yesterday; it's not for everyone, but I loved it."
"It definitely transitioned from being super tense and creepy to more campy by the end, but it's well paced and probably one of my favorite horror shows in recent memory," they added.
A third shared: "Netflix’s 'Something Very Bad is Going to Happen' is so creepy and unsettling, and I enjoyed every second of it."
A fourth praised: "Something very bad is going to happen, may just be one of the best shows I’ve ever watched."
Something Very Bad Is Going To Happen is available to watch on Netflix.
