On Friday Februay 23, 2018, Team USA did something historic at the Pyeonchang Winter Olympic games: they took the gold medal in the men's curling. No one expected them to win the clash against favorites Sweden, especially given that they were on the brink of getting kicked just a week earlier. Amazingly, it was their first ever gold medal in the sport. Well... kind of.

Because as it turns out there might have been one group of people to whom the special occasion did not come as all of that much of a surprise - and it wasn't the Team USA coaches. Nope, it was the writers of your favourite smash hit show, The Simpsons, who predicted that this would happen almost a decade ago.

In an episode broadcast on Valentine's Day 2010 and titled "Boy Meets Curl", Marge and Homer joined a mixed doubles curling team with Agnes and Seymour Skinner. The team qualified for the Olympics and, despite Marge picking up a shoulder injury, they became the unlikely winners, scooping the gold medal. If that wasn't enough, they even managed to predict the actual team that the USA would beat. Incredible, huh?

It wasn't an entirely clean sweep for the team behind The Simpsons, however. They didn't foresee Switzerland coming in third place, and it was the men's team that actually took home the gold, rather than the mixed doubles. In the show, the Olympics were also held in Vancouver, Canada, which is kind of awkward considering this is the first year that Canada hasn't scooped a curling medal. But still, when they've got so much right, you can't really fault them.

After the monumental victory, Simpsons writer Rob LaZebnik was quick to pick up on how reminiscent the victory was of the eight-year-old episode, jokingly tweeting: "Congrats to @USACurling2018 on their gold! Not the first time the US beat Sweden, though. Marge and Homer did it eight years ago."

It's not the first time that the makers of The Simpsons have been spot on when it comes to predicting future events. In fact, they've developed something of a reputation for their psychic abilities, seemingly being able to see stuff coming before anyone else.

In 1994, Homer was shown straddling a wrecking ball, à la Miley Cyrus in 2013. In the same year the episode "Sweet Seymour Skinner’s Baadasssss Song" anticipated horse meat being used as a secret ingredient, something that was revealed to be true in 2013 in Europe, when foods claiming to contain beef were found actually be made of undeclared horse meat. Fast-forward a few years to 1998, and you've got Disney taking over 20th Century Fox; it might have taken 20 years, but in 2017 the media conglomerate did pay a whopping $52 billion to take over most of 21st Century Fox’s assets.

And in a political plot-twist that no one would have expected to actually happen, The Simpsons predicted way back in 2010 that Donald Trump would become the president of the United States, in an episode fittingly titled "A warning to America". Whether Lisa Simpson will actually get her chance to take over from Trump, we'll have to wait and see.

So the only question is, what will they predict next? A lot of the previous prophecies seem to be really rubbish stuff - like unwittingly eating our favourite pets - so in this case it's nice to see one of the really positive ones come true. So, Simpsons writers, let's have more like this one, please!
