A Hollywood A-Lister has left fans shocked after a trailer for their latest film was released today (July 13).
Back in the day, all actors had to conceal their identity on-screen was the magic of make-up, but most eagle-eyed viewers could see through any shoddy work.
But nowadays, not only do we have the help of CGI, but also the assistance of Artificial Intelligence to fine-tune anything that may look underwhelming in post-production.
It's allowed actors to venture into roles as characters that may look absolutely nothing like them, with little to no drama.
Just look at the Marvel universe, for example, with alien characters appearing accurate enough to trick kids into believing that they may actually be otherworldly.
But now, technology is being used for human characters too, and Tom Cruise has left fans shocked with the look he has adopted for his upcoming 2026 title, Digger.
Cruise plays main character Digger Rockwell, who must save the world from an environmental disaster that he has apparently caused in the first place.
The Top Gun actor stars alongside the likes of Riz Ahmed, Jesse Plemons, and Sandra Hüller, while sporting a make-under of his appearance.
Set to be released in October 2026, the title has quickly become one of the most anticipated films of the year.
If it weren't for the actor's name featuring multiple times in the trailer, viewers likely would have needed a close look to figure out who the actor behind the prosthetics really was.
In addition to the new look, Cruise has also put on a strong accent, reminding us that he is one of the ultimate Hollywood icons.
While his roles in the past decade or so firmly made him the no. 1 action hero of his generation, his latest performance could put him into another discussion.
Rumor has it that Cruise could be placing himself firmly into the conversation for Best Actor at the Academy Awards at the age of 64, nearly 30 years after his last nomination in the category.
Speaking about the Alejandro G. Iñárritu-directed film, fans took to social media to share what they thought following the trailer's release.
One took to X, saying: "Every few years Tom Cruise does a movie to remind us all "oh yeah this guy act when he wants to."
Another said: "I mean... Looks like a huge swing, big-time Tom Cruise Oscarbait. I'm really jazzed to see this," with a different user adding: "Are they dropping a nuke on the North Pole? I don’t know what the hell this is about but I’m there for Tom’s insane performance lol."
"If Tom Cruise is invested in a movie then it’s a must watch, no matter how confused I am lol," a third added, referencing his heavy make-up.
It is arguably one of the strangest roles of his career, with many seeing dashes of Cruise's Les Grossman character from the 2008 comedy film Tropic Thunder.
Digger is set to be released in cinemas on October 2, 2026.

A Marvel star has undergone such an enormous transformation for his new role that he looks completely unrecognizable... Can you tell who it is yet?
The joy of makeup and prosthetics is that it allows actors to embody a completely different type of role than they would normally be cast in - just look at Colin Farrell playing the Penguin in the latest Batman movie!
Sometimes there is pushback on the use of prosthetics in films, with some claiming that actors who already look like the character should be cast instead, as happened recently with Brendan Fraser, who was criticized for using a fat suit for his starring role in The Whale.
But the job that makeup artists do cannot be underestimated, they are true magicians when it comes to transforming actors into somebody completely different.
So when they achieve making one of the world's most famous men completely unrecognizable, we should probably tip our hats to them and give them credit for their incredible art form.
Have you figured out who we're talking about yet or do you need a few more minutes to stare at the image before making a final guess?
As already given away, it's an incredibly famous Marvel star and a further clue is that he was the one who finally defeated Thanos... Of course, it's none other than Tony Stark himself, Robert Downey Jr. - we couldn't believe it either!
The Hollywood icon looks worlds apart from the clean-cut, well-dressed, and dare we say, handsome, characters we've come to know and love him for.
Downey Jr, 57, has transformed for his latest role - or roles - in HBO's The Sympathizer where he plays many parts all representing different parts of the American establishment.
His new hairline ages him quite considerably and that's mixed in with it being utterly bizarre that his usual dark head of hair is now red. Gone are the days of a clean-cut suit - he is now donning a bright pink shirt mixed with a burgundy jacket and blue pants and even people who aren't fashion-conscious might raise their eyebrows at these color clashes.
The star recently sat down with Deadline where he revealed more about this upcoming project: "The next thing I’m doing is a series with my Mrs. and the director Park Chan-Wook, based on a Pulitzer book called The Sympathizer.
"It’s already a transformative, literally playing five different roles, experience for me. So, I would just say, before we cast aspersions on each other — undergo your own renaissance and see if it doesn’t change your mind a little bit.
"Reinvent yourself before you decide that somebody else doesn’t know what they’re doing or that something is keeping you from doing your best, or that something is better than something else."
We still can't believe that it's him, and neither can people on social media! One person said: "Robert Downey Jr. looking like James Caan on the set of The Sympathizer."
We can't wait to see how Downey Jr. performs in this upcoming project, and kudos again to the makeup team!
Tom Cruise looked completely "unrecognizable" at a baseball game over the weekend, according to fans.
On Saturday, October 9, the 59-year-old Mission Impossible star was seen on a rare outing with his 26-year-old son Connor at a baseball game between the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Francisco Giants.
Since the game, photos of the actor in the stands have surfaced online, leading some social media users to wonder why his appearance had supposedly changed overnight.
His face, in particular, appeared more bloated than usual, according to his eagle-eyed fans. Some of the commenters even implied that the look may have been the result of a cosmetic procedure.
For example, one person said: "@TomCruise What have you done to your gorgeous face?!!!! I was soooo disappointed when I saw you in the stands at the Dodgers game! STOP putting crap into your face please!!!!"
Another wanted to know: "What the hell is going on with his face?? Is he having an allergic reaction??"
A third asked: "What's up with the bloated chipmunk cheeks?"
"Tom Cruise is unrecognizable #SFvsLAD," another wrote.
"That's definitely a Tom Cruise lookalike. It can't be the real TC. He would be either sitting in the suite's, the owner's box or if it was an NBA game he would be sitting in courtside seats," another remarked.
Others, however, rushed to Cruise's defense, with one fan writing: "Listen I don’t like tom cruise at all (AT ALL), but I’m seriously sick of twitter trashing people for their weight fluctuations. people are allowed to gain and lose weight, and it’s really nunya!!! stop being fatphobic! [sic]"
Another chimed in: "He still looks great for his age. He’s almost 60 for Pete’s sake. I wasn’t expecting the 80s hair plugs though. He must wear some of that hair thickener and lots of make-up for public appearances."
A final social media user wrote: "How does anyone know or not know if Tom is in the process of making a movie.
"Where perhaps his role provides him to put on some weight. Besides, hasn't anyone ever gained any unwanted weight? It just seems nowadays that people "hide" behind their pen & slander whoever or whatever."
In any case, Cruise is currently on a well-deserved break after filming on Mission: Impossible 7 wrapped last month.
The release of the latest installment in the franchise is slated for September 2022.
As a veteran Hollywood A-lister of 40 years, Tom Cruise has no doubt heard and read a lot of rumors about himself. But one in particular is making him laugh a lot recently.
The 61-year-old Mission Impossible star has been subjected to tons of news stories over the years, including one from 2020 surrounding a reported on-set blowup over people not following Covid protocols.
However, in a recent interview with The Sunday Times, Cruise's Mission Impossible co-star Simon Pegg and director Richard McQuarrie were quick to shoot down the drama surrounding the four time Oscar nominee.
McQuarrie relayed a story to the Times of a rumor Cruise himself shared with the director ahead of filming Mission Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One, the seventh instalment in the franchise.
The filmmaker had asked Cruise what the "weirdest story you've ever heard about yourself" was and Cruise delighted in giving him the answer.
Cruise revealed to McQuarrie, after a laugh, that he had heard that on set during filming, people "were not allowed to look me in the eye".
The Collateral actor was known to engage in dance-offs on the set of Top Gun: Maverick, which certainly wouldn't be all that enjoyable if no eye contact were allowed during them.
Pegg, meanwhile, also myth busted some of the rumors surrounding Cruise, with whom he has worked together for over a decade, since joining the Mission Impossible franchise with Ghost Protocol in 2011.
"I’ve been able to hack my way through all the bizarre mythology that surrounds him. On one side he’s Tom Cruise — this enigmatic film star everyone wants to know about. And on the other, he’s just a guy. I like being normal with him."
Speaking on the 2020 bust-up that received so much media publicity, which saw on-set audio of Cruise leaked shouting "If I see you do it again you’re f***ing gone" at two crew members who had ignored social distancing guidelines at a time when Dead Reckoning was one of the first shoots to reopen during the pandemic, Pegg said, "Everything that Tom cares about, in terms of his job, was at stake due to the pandemic. For him, there was a danger this virus could wipe cinema off the face of this earth."
Post-pandemic, Cruise's work has received a ton of plaudits and has been credited with reviving cinema after the industry incurred so many horrendous financial losses during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Top Gun: Maverick was an extraordinary success last year, grossing nearly $1.5 billion so far, while the latest Mission Impossible picture is already drawing in brilliant reviews, currently sitting on a 98% certified fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
The film has so far received a limited release and will be opened everywhere as of today (July 11).
