Iman Vellani has shared her thoughts on The Marvels' disappointing box office performance following the movie's release.

Written and directed by Nia DaCosta, The Marvels is the 33rd feature-length installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

It tells the story of Carol Danvers (played by Brie Larson, 34) getting her powers entangled with those of Kamala Khan (played by Vellani, 21) and Monica Rambeau (played by Teyonah Parris, 36), which forces them to work together to save the universe.

The flick is a sequel to 2019's billion-dollar movie Captain Marvel, which included some big names - including Jude Law, Samuel L. Jackson, and Gemma Chan.

The film opened on November 10, where it took $21.5m at the box office in the US on its first day - the second-lowest grossing opening day for an MCU film, according to The Independent.

Over the entire weekend, the movie took just $47m in North America and $63 million internationally, per Variety.

This positioned The Marvels at the lower end of its estimated domestic takings based on the first-day sales and gave it the worst US opening weekend of any MCU film against an estimated $220m budget.

Prior to the film's release, the worst debut belonged to 2008's rendition of The Incredible Hulk which came in at approximately $55.4 million (not adjusted for inflation) and premiered in the early stages of the development of the MCU.

In close second place was Ant-Man, which took $57.2m in its opening weekend in 2015.

Vellani spoke to Yahoo Entertainment about commotion surrounding the recent release's performance and explained that she does not want "to focus on" factors out of her control and is leaving that job to Disney CEO Bob Iger.

"I don’t want to focus on something that’s not even in my control, because what’s the point?" the Canadian star said. "That’s for Bob Iger."

The young actress - who originated her character last year in the Disney+ series Ms. Marvel - said that she is delighted to hear from audience members who have enjoyed the film.

"[The box office] has nothing to do with me," she reiterated. "I’m happy with the finished product, and the people that I care about enjoyed the film. It’s genuinely a good time watching this movie, and that’s all we can ask for with these films."

"It has superheroes, it takes place in space, it’s not that deep and it’s about teamwork and sisterhood. It’s a fun movie, and I’m just so happy that I can share it with people," she added.

In reference to author Stephen King criticizing the negative responses to the film, Vellani said: "Having Stephen King in anyone’s corner is pretty awesome."

The flick is currently experiencing the MCU's worst second-weekend decline ever, as Variety reported that it earned just under $3 million on Friday, marking a staggering 87 percent drop.

The Marvels is in cinemas now.
