While Johnny Depp was the center of attention for his appearance at the Cannes Film Festival, he also went viral for the wrong reasons.

On Tuesday (May 16), the 59-year-old Pirates of the Caribbean actor attended the 76th Film Festival for the world premiere of his new film Jeanne du Barry.

The historical drama is set in 18th-century France and sees Depp portray King Louis XV. It follows the love story between the King and a working-class woman, Jeanne Vaubernier (played by director and actress Maïwenn) who works her way through the social ranks.

The film is the controversial actor's first leading role since his highly publicized defamation trial last year with Amber Heard - where he was awarded $10 million in compensatory damages.

The actor made headlines for featuring at the film festival following his much-publicized trial with ex Amber Heard last year - such as receiving a seven-minute standing ovation - but, he also took the internet by storm after a picture of his teeth went viral.

Hey, there's only so many megapints of red wine one can drink before it starts to stain the enamel.

A page on Twitter shared a close-up image with the caption: "Johnny Depp's teeth appear to be rotting," and the post amassed 4.7 million views and 29.2K likes on the social media platform.

While many users seemed to joke about the actor, his devoted fans rushed to the comment section to defend him. One user wrote: "Leave Johnny Depp alone you stupid people. He is the best person ever."

Another fan said: "People can be so mean. imagine him seeing this." while a third contended: "Dudes almost 60. This is what happens as you age. Shows what Hollywood is doing to all you sheep."

Meanwhile, a fourth fan remarked: "Media is so toxic to the human mind. Like why do we care."

While moviegoers were pleased with the Fantastic Beasts actor's "comeback" appearance at the prestigious festival's opening night, several others were left disappointed.

However, Depp clapped back at the backlash towards him during a press conference on Wednesday (May 17), saying: "What if one day, they did not allow me to go to McDonald's for life because somewhere there'd be 39 angry people watching me eat a Big Mac on a loop? Who are they? What do they care?"

The Edwards Scissorhands actor also reflected on the last three tumultuous years of his life and opened up about whether he feels "boycotted" by Hollywood.

"I don't feel boycotted by Hollywood, because I don't think about Hollywood. I don't have much further need for Hollywood, myself," he said. "It's a strange, funny time where everybody would love to be able to be themselves, but they can't. They must fall in line with the person in front of them. If you want to live that life, I wish you the best."

Furthermore, the embattled star went on to address what it was like being asked to "resign" from a film and stated: "Did I feel boycotted by Hollywood? You'd have to not have a pulse to feel like, 'No. None of this is happening. It's a weird joke.'

"When you're asked to resign from a film you're doing because of something that is merely a function of vowels and consonants floating in the air, yes, you feel boycotted," he added.
