Johnny Depp reportedly used his own money to look after crew members working on the set of Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.
In 2010, Depp apparently became concerned about the crew, who were working in cold, rainy conditions at Pinewood Studios in England.
Wanting to make sure they were protected from harsh conditions, the now 58-year-old actor used his own money to ensure that all 500 crew members had warm, waterproof coats. The expense reportedly set the actor back a hefty $55,000.
Speaking with The Sun at the time, a crew member revealed: "Johnny paid out of his own pocket for all 500 of us to have a nice warm waterproof. It's a great morale boost and another example of why he is one of the nicest people in Hollywood."
Kevin McNally, who played hardy sea dog Mr. Gibbs in the swashbuckling franchise, recently confirmed that this story was indeed true during an interview with Daily Express.
The 65-year-old recalled: "He bought the entire crew coats, the cast didn't see any coats. I think he didn't want to spoil us. He also did get the entire crew some very nice wallets imprinted with the tattoo he has on his arm."
The tattoo in question is the sparrow on his forearm after his character's namesake, which is a real tattoo.
Elsewhere, McNally backed Depp's return to the franchise despite the actor's legal trouble.
McNally said he had "never seen a hint of any dark side to Johnny". Depp, 58, has led all five Pirates of the Caribbean movies as the iconic Captain Jack Sparrow.
But his high-profile split from ex-wife Amber Heard and failure to sue The Sun newspaper - who branded him a 'wife-beater' - has left him boycotted by most of Hollywood.
This includes Pirates of the Caribbean studio Disney, who last year announced they'd be taking the billion-dollar franchise in a new direction, with Margot Robbie stepping into the captain's boots., per Hollywood Reporter.
Nevertheless, McNally continues to back his return to the franchise.
"I think there was a general feeling that without Jack there is no Pirates franchise. And there's probably a lot of truth in that," he told Daily Express while promoting his new movie Decrypted.
McNally went on to talk about the different ways Depp could be included in the franchise without taking a starring role.
"You can easily think of stories in which somebody is looking for Jack and come to Mr Gibbs and say, 'How would I find Jack?' And so have a whole bunch of people on a trek to find the legendary Jack Sparrow," he added.
McNally isn't the only one hoping that Depp will sail again in the new Pirates movie. A fan petition campaigning for his return to the high seas has amassed over 650,000 signatures.
