Justin Bieber has admitted that the first year of his marriage to Hailey Baldwin was "really tough".

The Yummy singer, 27, married the supermodel, 24, in a secret ceremony in New York in 2018. The pair went on to exchange vows in a formal ceremony in South Carolina in September 2019.

In a very candid interview with GQ, Bieber, who graced the magazine's May issue, spoke openly about some of the struggles he encountered early on in his marriage.

"The first year of marriage was really tough because there was a lot going back to the trauma. There was just a lack of trust," he told the magazine.

"There was all these things that you don't want to admit to the person that you're with, because it's scary. You don't want to scare them off by saying, 'I'm scared'."

According to the Baby hitmaker, he spent his first year as a husband "on eggshells" but he eventually began to have more faith in his marriage.

These days, Bieber and Baldwin are "just creating these moments for us as a couple, as a family, that we’re building these memories. And it’s beautiful that we have that to look forward to.

"Before, I didn’t have that to look forward to in my life. My home life was unstable. Like, my home life was not existing. I didn’t have a significant other. I didn’t have someone to love. I didn’t have someone to pour into. But now I have that."

Bieber also opened up about how he had always felt "compelled" to become a husband one day.

He said: "I just felt like that was my calling. Just to get married and have babies and do that whole thing."

In terms of potential children, though, the Grammy winner said he and Baldwin are not thinking of becoming parents "this second" but "eventually".

The pair first met all the way back in 2009 when Baldwin, who was only 12 at the time, was introduced to the precocious Baby singer by her father Stephen Baldwin, brother of Alec Baldwin, backstage at The Today Show.
