After the accusations of rape and other sexual offenses against Russell Brand emerged over the weekend, an old interview with his ex-wife Katy Perry has resurfaced.
The 48-year-old comedian and actor is at the center of harrowing allegations involving sexual assault and predatory behavior after four women came forward.
The claims - which date back to when Brand was at the height of his fame from 2006 to 2013 - were spotlighted in a joint investigation by The Times and Channel 4's Dispatches.
While the 38-year-old 'Fireworks' hitmaker did not address the allegations against her former husband - who asked her for a divorce via text in 2012 - an old Vogue interview of her opening up about the circumstances surrounding her split from Brand has now emerged online.
The 'Teenage Dream' pop star first met Brand backstage at the 2008 MTV VMAs ceremony. At the same award show that following year, Perry reportedly threw a plastic bottle at the actor's head, and the pair were romantically linked soon after.
They married one year later in a ceremony at the Ranthambore Tiger Sanctuary in Rajasthan, India, with the Get Him To Greek actor arriving at the wedding on an elephant. They then divorced in 2012, citing "irreconcilable differences".
In the 2013 Vogue interview, Perry described Brand's behavior during their marriage as "very controlling," alluding to what she described as a "real truth" about the comedian that she wouldn’t disclose.
"At first when I met him he wanted an equal, and I think a lot of times strong men do want an equal, but then they get that equal and they’re like, I can’t handle the equalness," she said. "He didn’t like the atmosphere of me being the boss on tour. So that was really hurtful, and it was very controlling, which was upsetting."
"I felt a lot of responsibility for it ending, but then I found out the real truth, which I can’t necessarily disclose because I keep it locked in my safe for a rainy day," Perry cryptically added, without elaborating further.
The father-of-two - who is currently married to Laura Gallacher - categorically denied the chilling allegations in a video released to his YouTube channel, moments before the report detailing the accusations was published.
Watch Brand's video below:"I've received two extremely disturbing letters or a letter and an email," he said. "One from a mainstream media TV company, one from a newspaper listing a litany of extremely egregious and aggressive attacks, as well as some pretty stupid stuff like my community festival should be stopped, that I shouldn't be able to attack mainstream media narratives on this channel."
Acknowledging that he had a "time of promiscuity", the British star claimed that all of his previous relationships have been consensual. He then considered if there were ulterior motives behind the claims, questioning: "And to see that transparency metastasized into something criminal that I absolutely deny makes me question, is there another agenda at play?"
Brand signed off by claiming that he was the victim of a targeted attack by the media, presumably due to his YouTube channel where he often questions the media's motives.
