Katy Perry has revealed the true meaning behind her hit song 'Firework' - and it's probably not what you expect!

I think we can all agree that Katy Perry releases banger after banger because it's hard not to sing along when they come on the radio.

That being said, it turns out that we might not actually know what we're singing along to, which seems oddly common.

Still, it won't stop me from singing at the top of my lungs.

Anyway...

'Firework' featured on Perry's third album, Teenage Dream, soared to the top of the Billboard Hot 100 chart and sold over one million copies in the UK alone.

Co-written by Perry alongside Stargate, Sandy Wilhelm, and Ester Dean, the song debuted live on The Late Show with David Letterman and has since become a fan favorite among Perry’s followers, known as KatyCats.

Despite its uplifting melody, many fans remain unaware of the heavy meaning behind the song.

Before you find out the meaning, have a read of the lyrics and see if you can workout what it's about:

"'Cause baby, you're a firework / Come on, show 'em what you're worth / Make 'em go, 'Oh, oh, oh' / As you shoot across the sky / Baby, you're a firework / Come on, let your colors burst / Make 'em go, 'oh, oh, oh' / You're gonna leave 'em all in awe, awe, awe!"

Any guesses?

In a 2010 interview with Billboard, Perry shared her unique final wish: "Basically, I have this very morbid idea when I pass, I want to be put into a firework and shot across the sky over the Santa Barbara Ocean as my last hurrah," she revealed.

Perry’s inspiration came from a passage in Jack Kerouac’s 1957 novel On the Road, which a former boyfriend had shown her.

"[It’s] about people that are buzzing and fizzing and full of life and never say a commonplace thing,” Perry explained.

“They shoot across the sky like a firework and make people go, ‘Ahhh.’ I guess that making people go ‘ahhh’ is kind of like my motto."

In other Katy Perry news, she recently left fans in awe with her appearance at Vogue World: Paris.

The former American Idol judge captivated the audience in a daring cut-out ensemble adorned with intricate geometric patterns in peach and black tones.

The gown, featuring zippered edges and billowing embellishments, accentuated Perry's enviable physique.

She paired the outfit flawlessly with laced-up black leather boots, enhancing her commanding presence on the catwalk.

Aside from her runway triumph, Perry has been creating anticipation with her upcoming single announcement.

Titled 'Woman's World', the track is set to be released in July. Perry teased fans with a brief snippet on social media, accompanied by a revealing white bikini shot.

In the clip, she delivers empowering lyrics over an electro beat: "It's a woman's world and you're lucky to be living in it."
