PewDiePie's one-eyed pug, Maya, has sadly passed away at the age of 17, the Youtube star revealed in a heartfelt Instagram post.

Dogs have an amazing ability to come into our lives and pull at our heartstrings in a way that we never thought possible, so when they pass on, the heartbreak can be devastating - and Maya had been loved by a legion of fans.

PewDiePie - real name Felix Arvid Ulf Kjellberg - shot to YouTube stardom after joining the platform in 2010, quickly rising through the ranks to obtain the title of most subscribed, with over 100 million subscribers.

This is a title he lost in November to Mr. Beast, a content creator known for his high-budget videos that feature challenges and eye-watering amounts of money as prizes.

PewDiePie sadly took to Instagram to share images of his one-eyed pooch, who died at the age of 17, finishing with an image of the pair together.

In a heartfelt statement, the Youtube star said: "Said farewell to my little Maya this morning.. 17 years is a long time for a pug, but no time in the world would've ever been enough... I didn't think I could love a dog as much as I loved her.

"Thank you for all the wonderful time we got to spend with you. Thank you for always making my days brighter. Thank you for bringing me closer to Marzia."

Marzia is PewDiePie's wife, who he married in 2019. The pair reportedly met in 2011 after a friend of Marzia's shared the Youtube star's content with her, saying she should watch "this idiot playing video games."

Speaking in a vlog earlier this year, PewDiePie updated viewers that Maya's health had been declining and that she had dementia.

Condolences poured in for the adorable little pug in the comments of the Instagram post. Internet-famous Doug the Pug said: "Maya was the cutest girl pug I’ve ever known. I’m so grateful we got to meet her. She was filled with joy and happiness and her memory will always be a celebration. You guys [gave] her the most incredible life. She will be so missed."
