Sam Smith recently broke down on stage during a concert and now the singer's spoken out on why they got so emotional.
On Saturday, the 31-year-old made an appearance at the Centre Bell in Montreal, Canada where they were met with thousands of fans who were cheering for them.
Taking to Instagram after the performance, the Grammy-award-winning artist posted a clip of their performance which was originally captured by user @mikechaar, showing a bunch of fans cheering the star as they smiled sheepishly while wiping their tears clearly overwhelmed by the response.
In the caption, Smith opened up about the importance of the location, as well as the special night.
"Dear Montréal," they started. "When I was in my early teens, a DVD of Rihanna's girl gone bad tour came out and the show was at the bell centre. I watched it religiously. I was totally obsessed."
"Deep down it was my life’s mission to get to that room and to sing on that stage," they continued. "My first time doing a show on that stage was at 21 years old with the In the lonely hour tour and it was my favourite show of the entire tour. You’ve just done it again."
Smith, who is openly non-binary, then went on to describe their feelings while on stage, saying that they had never experienced a feeling so immense.
"Last night made me feel a type of way I don’t think I’ve ever felt on stage," they wrote. "I’ve never felt so much love or heard an applause like that for myself ever.
"It makes every hard and challenging moment so worth it. The love for music and art in Montréal is astounding. I’m deeply deeply grateful to you all. You made that confused 14 year old queer kid watching @badgalriri from a TV in a tiny village in England's dreams come true last night."
They concluded the emotional post by expressing their love for their fans: "I love you irrevocably."
Thousands took to the comments to praise the star for their talent as well as their ability to inspire audiences.
"I had the best night of my life yesterday. thank you sam, we love you," wrote one user who saw Smith that night.
"I’ve been waiting for this night for years. You’re bigger than yourself!" added another.
A third recalled their experience at the venue, calling Smith honest, courageous and kind.
"Dear Sam, thank you! Immensely," they started. "I went to see the Gloria Tour last night and could not stop crying. Your honesty, your courage, your kindness: everything that went above and beyond the amazing show you put together. Your crew, lyrics and your voice... everything flawless!
They continued: "Thank you for being such an amazing example to the new generations and for paving the way for other artists to show their true, gorgeous, sparkling colors. I’ve reached an age where creating memories is one of the things I most cherish, and the memory of you has been saved in a very special place, right at the top..."
Smith's Gloria tour consists of 75 tour dates dotted all around the world.
After their set dates in Canada which were all completed last night, the 31-year-old will be heading to the US to continue on the next leg of the tour, with the first performance set to kick off at the United Center in Chicago.
