Jim Carrey has slammed the Oscar's crowd for giving Will Smith a standing ovation after he slapped Chris Rock at Sunday's ceremony, adding that he believes the comedian should sue.

In a now-infamous moment, Smith stormed on stage and hit Rock across the face when he made a joke about Smith's wife Jada Pinkett Smith.

Less than half an hour later, Smith was back on stage to receive the Academy Award for Best Actor, which he accepted to cheers from the audience who moments earlier were stunned into silence by his physical altercation.

Needless to say, the slap - which was broadcast live around the world - has been all anyone can talk about over the past few days. With opinions divided over who was in the right, actor and comedian Jim Carrey has weighed in on the debate, saying he would be filing charges if he were in Rock's position.

"I'd have announced this morning that I was suing Will for $200 million," the Ace Ventura star said during an interview with CBS Morning News about his new film, Sonic the Hedgehog 2. "That video's gonna be there forever. It's gonna be ubiquitous. That insult is gonna last a very long time," he added.

The Ace Ventura star went on to say that Smith had crossed a line by using violence. "If you want to yell from the audience in disapproval or say something on Twitter - whatever. You do not have the right to walk up on stage and smack somebody on the face because they said words," he said.

Carrey added that he doesn't "have anything against Will Smith" who he believes has "done great things". However, he expressed his frustration that the slap had "cast a pall over everybody's shining moment."

"A lot of people worked really hard to get to that place. It is no mean feat to go through all the stuff you have to go through when you get nominated for an Oscar. It's a gauntlet of devotion. It was just a selfish moment," he said.

Meanwhile, it wasn't just Smith who Carrey thinks is in the wrong. In the interview, he also hit out at those celebs who gave Smith a standing ovation when he won his Oscar.

"I was sickened by the standing ovation. I felt like Hollywood is just spineless en masse," he said.
