The widow of the late Red Sox legend Tim Wakefield has passed away five months after her husband's death.

On Wednesday (February 28), it was announced that Stacey Wakefield had tragically passed away after a battle with pancreatic cancer. She was 53 years old.

In a statement posted to the official X account for the Red Sox, the team emphasized their sadness at the news and sent their love to the Wakefield family during this difficult time.

"It is with deep sadness that we share that our beloved mother, daughter, sister, niece, and aunt, Stacy, passed away today at her home in Massachusetts," the statement read. "She was surrounded by her family and dear friends, as well as her wonderful caretakers and nurses. The loss is unimaginable, especially in the wake of losing Tim just under five months ago. Our hearts are beyond broken."

It continued: We will remember Stacy as a strong, loving, thoughtful, and kind person, who was as down-to-earth as they come. We feel so lucky to have had her in our lives, and we take comfort in the fact that she will be reunited with Tim, the love of her life."

The team then went on to thank "all of Stacy's doctors, nurses and caretakers who helped her from diagnosis to today-we are eternally grateful for your unmatched care and support," before going on to thank the fans who rallied around her before her death.

"And to all of you who have sent well wishes over these last several months, we truly appreciate your kindness. We kindly ask for privacy at this time as we try to process this profound loss," the statement concluded.

Tim, who was a legendary "knuckleball" pitcher for the Red Sox, tragically passed away five months before his wife after his bout with brain cancer, which was revealed by Curt Schilling during a podcast episode without the couple's permission last year.

PEOPLE then confirmed that the Wakefields were not pleased with the revelation and asked for "privacy" while he continued to battle the terrible disease.

"We are aware of the statements and inquiries about the health of Tim and Stacy Wakefield," the statement obtained by the outlet read. "Unfortunately, this information has been shared publicly without their permission. Their health is a deeply personal matter they intended to keep private as they navigate treatment and work to tackle this disease."

The statement also added: "Tim and Stacy are appreciative of the support and love that has always been extended to them and respectfully ask for privacy at this time."

Just a few weeks later, the former Red Sox player passed away aged 57.

At the time of Tim's death, MLB took to Twitter to post a tribute for the star, writing: "We are deeply saddened by the passing of Tim Wakefield, 19-year Major Leaguer, two-time World Series champion, 2009 AL All-Star, and the 2010 Roberto Clemente Award winner."

"Tim embodied the finest qualities as a teammate, a competitor, and a caring man. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Wakefield family and all who knew and loved Tim," the post added.

The couple are survived by their two children - Trevor, 19, and Brianna, 17.

Our thoughts are with the Wakefield family and their loved ones during this incredibly difficult time.
