Stuntman who played Michael Myers in original 'Halloween' movie James Winburn dies aged 85

The actor who portrayed Michael Myers in the original Halloween movie sadly passed away aged 85.

James Winburn played the iconic character for certain stunt scenes in the 1978 movie and returned in the sequel Halloween II in 1981.

The original movie had a budget of $300,000 and was shot in just 17 days went on to gross $47 million at the box office which made it one of the most successful independent movies of all time, per IMDb.

James was a stuntman for the films and portrayed Michael Myers when the character of Dr. Loomis shot the character six times, causing him to fall off a balcony, per the Daily Mail.

The actors' passing was revealed via Monopoly Events (@monopolyevents1) on Twitter. The events company featured James at last month's For The Love Of Horror convention.

Their statement read: "We are extremely sad to learn of the passing of James Winburn, who joined us for (For The Love Of Horror) @ftlohorror last month.

"James was an absolute pleasure to work and shared some amazing stories with everyone over the weekend. Our sincere condolences go out to his family, friends and fans. #RIP."

James was due to feature at the Monster-Mania Convention this year but pulled out for health reasons. The firm offered its condolences via a Facebook post.

It said: "Sad to learn of the passing of James Winburn today. James was an absolute pleasure to work with and we had hoped to see him again for our show in Oaks, PA but sadly a health issue prevented that.

"James was always appreciative of the Halloween fans and truly enjoyed meeting everyone. Our sincere condolences go out to his family, friends and fans."

The stuntman appeared opposite actress Jamie Lee Curtis, whose character, Laurie, was revived for the latest installments of the Halloween saga in 2018, 2021, and most recently in Halloween Ends in 2022.

James' other credits feature stunts in movies such as Tron (1982), Colors (1988), and Escape From New York in 1981.

The Halloween actor is believed to have passed away sometime over the weekend, however, his death wasn't announced until Monday, as reported by the Daily Mail. The cause of death is currently unknown.
