Viewers in the UK have been left stunned after MasterChef star Greg Wallace appeared to eat "human meat" in a bizarre documentary.

On Monday (July 24), Channel 4 in the UK aired a show from the 58-year-old presenter, with the title Gregg Wallace: The British Miracle Meat.

The "documentary" had been advertised by the British broadcaster as a show which would explore options for food production amid price rises in the UK, and reveal the lengths people will go to to keep their families out of poverty.

The description of the episode reads: "With food prices soaring, Gregg Wallace investigates a controversial new lab-grown meat product that its makers claim could provide a solution to the cost-of-living crisis."

The one-off show gave the audience a look into a secret laboratory where workers mass-produced "engineered human meat" in water tanks. They also said that the meat was cheaper than any animal alternative, meaning that whole families can be fed for very little and steaks cost just $1 each.

According to The Independent, in one shocking scene viewers were told that children under the age of seven - volunteered by their families - were good donors. In addition to this, there was also a particular scene where Wallace met a 67-year-old retired receptionist named Gillian who has been forced to donate her flesh to look after her family.

If you haven't guessed already, the TV show was thankfully a spoof and created to raise awareness of the current state of society. However, Channel 4 did such a good job that many viewers thought it was real…

One disgusted user said: "What the f*** am I watching on channel 4???"

Another terrified person chimed in: "So… did anybody watch Gregg Wallace on c4 The British Miracle Meat?! Good Harvest are making meat products from human donors, incl a premium range from milk fed children under 6/7 years old, because it’s really creamy!!!! what the f is the World coming to?!"

Someone else remarked: "So now we are out of the EU, the UK can now sell meat that has been lab-grown from HUMAN CELLS!!!!. Its on channel 4 if you want to see this madness. Gregg Wallace: The British Miracle Meat."

And, a fourth said: "This #GregWallace #MiracleMeat program that grows Human tissue for consumption is seriously knocking me sick! Donors of humans to make human meat is surely cannibalism?!? Tissue grown into steaks. It’s knocking me sick! I’m going vegan!! Greg & Michael Roux are eating this."

The outrage at the documentary was very pleasing to the Masterchef star who took to Instagram to share a post thanking Channel 4 for his first-ever acting job.

"Satire. See Jonathan Swift 'A Modest Proposal'," Wallace wrote in the caption.

Satire or not, it's safe to say the show more than fulfilled its aim of deeply disturbing viewers.
