Viewers have been left in tears after watching the new season of an emotional Netflix show.

On December 2, the first nine episodes of the second season of Firefly Lane dropped on the streaming service after the first season came out in 2021.

The drama - which stars Katherine Heigl and Sarah Chalke - is based on Kristin Hannah's novel of the same name and it follows the friendship between best friends from their teenage years all the way to their 40s.

According to People, in season two the characters grapple with "the painful aftermath of Johnny's ill-fated trip to Iraq, while Tully faces a lawsuit after walking away from her talk show, and must start her career over from the bottom".

Check the trailer out below:

The synopsis continues that through her lawsuit, Tully - played by the 44-year-old actress - looks for answers about her birth father "against the wishes of her secretive hippie mother, Cloud".

After binge-watching all nine episodes, fans took to the social media platform to express their stunned reactions to the ending of the show.

One user shared their devastation, writing: "omg I finally caught up on #FireflyLane that was DEVASTATING I'm fuming it’s been left like that W** nooooo I cannot wait until JUNE ARE YOU KIDDING ME RIGHT NOW???"

Another equally upset user chimed in and said: "I just finished Firefly lane season 2 and I am sobbing."

A third person remarked: "Why is no one talking about #FireflyLane? That last episode was devastating and so good. Growing up with a best friend is so special and shouldn’t be taken for granted."

Lastly, a fourth commented: "Someone discuss firefly lane with me, crying my eyes out at 8 am."

In October 2022, Netflix revealed that Firefly Lane season 2 will be the show's last - meaning that part two will serve as the show's final episode.

When the first half of the 16-episode season dropped this month, the streaming giant vaguely announced that the second half would be released next year - without a proper release date.

Thankfully, the Grey's Anatomy star listened to fan complaints and shared an official release date for the hit drama on her Twitter page.

"And... when you guys are done binging those new #FireflyLane episodes... you can look forward to 7 more! Season 2 part 2 will be hitting your screens on June 8, 2023," Heigl wrote.

There might be a six-month wait, but at least fans will get the answers they crave eventually...
