Yesterday, news sources got hold of
a letter from Carrie Underwood to her fans, in which she stated that she "somehow managed to injure [her] face" in a fall last November. The 34-year-old country singer had actually spoken out about the incident when it first happened, but at the time she only mentioned the damage to her wrist.
"I just wanted let everyone know that I’m doing great," she tweeted on November 15th of last year. "Had surgery on my wrist yesterday & all went well...even though I’ll be setting off airport metal detectors from now on...I’m so thankful for the doctors, nurses, family & friends who’ve been taking such great care of me."
At the time, the star received hundreds of messages of support - but now, with the additional news that she apparently had a significant amount of surgery on her face, too, people are accusing her of lying.

In a message to her followers, Underwood said:
“There is also another part of the story [of her breaking her wrist] that I haven’t been ready to talk about since I have still been living it and there has been much uncertainty as to how things will end up.
“In addition to breaking my wrist, I somehow managed to injure my face as well. I’ll spare you the gruesome details, but when I came out of surgery the night of my fall, the doctor told [Underwood’s husband] Mike that he had put between 40 and 50 stitches in.”
The star also said that she hadn't shown her face since then for that reason, and only informed her fans about it just now because she wanted them to know why her appearance might have changed when they next see her. "When I am ready to get in front of a camera, I want you all to understand why I might look a bit different," she said.
But
Twitter was quick to point out that they
had seen her face since November, indicating that this photo from December appeared to show her completely unscathed:

If that's the case, though, why would Underwood lie about having had surgery?
Well, many people think that the star might have had some kind of cosmetic procedure, and is now using her prior accident as a cover for why she "might look a bit different". After all, she had been a little murky with some of the details, having only said that she "somehow managed to injure [her] face".

But others pointed out that, in the photo from December, only half of the singer's face is clearly visible, and there is a possibility that the injuries she sustained were on the concealed side. This is a likely explanation - though it is odd that Underwood allowed a picture to have been posted of her so soon after the accident, and then later coming out to say she "might look different". Perhaps she was just preparing her fans for the worst so that they would be relieved when they saw she didn't look all that changed at all.
Either way, she continues to receive lots of supportive messages, with many people reassuring her that they don't care how she looks.

Perhaps the star will post another photo soon to clear the air, but she's more than entitled to her privacy. Get well soon, Carrie!
