A woman has pleaded guilty to a murder that took place three decades ago committed by a person dressed as a clown, but her lawyers maintain her innocence.
As reported by CNN, Marlene Warren was shot and killed in May 1990 as her children were inside having breakfast at her residence in West Palm Beach, Florida.
Warren answered her front door on the morning of the killing to find somebody dressed as a clown holding balloons and flowers.
Police stated that the clown handed Warren the gifts before brandishing a gun and shooting her in the head. She passed away in the hospital two days later.
Sheila Keen-Warren, 59, was arrested 27 years after the murder took place, during which time she had married Warren's widowed husband.
The 59-year-old was arrested and charged in 2017 and on Tuesday (April 25) she withdrew her earlier plea of not guilty and changed it to guilty.
According to CNN, this is a plea deal that has been agreed with prosecutors that will see Keen-Warren serve 12 years in prison with credit for the time she has served since her arrest.
State Attorney for Palm Beach County Dave Aronberg said: "After years of professing her innocence, Sheila Keen Warren has finally been forced to admit that she was the one who dressed as a clown and took the life of an innocent victim."
Keen-Warren's lawyers, alongside the 59-year-old herself, maintain that she is innocent but state that she is happy with the plea terms.
Her attorney Greg Rosenfeld said: "This woman should never have been arrested or prosecuted. She was looking forward to her day in court."
Despite the belief that she is innocent, Rosenfeld conceded that the plea deal was her best option, stating: "You never know what could happen in a trial."
He added: "The state of Florida originally wanted to execute her, but now she is going home in 10 months. While it was difficult to plead guilty to a crime she did not commit, it was kind of a no-brainer when there is a guarantee that you will be home with your family."
Prosecutor Reid Scott said that the evidence they would have submitted in court would have led to a jury finding her guilty of murder, to which Keen-Warren agreed.
Some of the evidence stacked against the 59-year-old included workers at a costume shop confirming that she had purchased the clown costume.
During the initial investigation into Warren's murder, it was alleged that her husband Michael and Keen-Warren were having an affair, but they denied this when questioned.
Twelve years later the pair were married, despite the 59-year-old being a key suspect in the murder.
The evidence available at the time of the murder wasn't strong enough to prosecute Keen-Warren, but a DNA breakthrough in 2014 reopened the case as the authority's evidence was strengthened.
CBS News reports that due to Keen-Warren having already served six years, it is likely that she will be released from prison within the next year due to good behavior.

Two years ago, in 2016, a strange and disturbing trend emerged. "Killer clowns", as they were known, began appearing in public spaces: on streets, near schools, in forests - first of all just in the USA, but later in Europe, South America, and Australia/New Zealand.
At the time, many people brushed the incidents off as mere nuisances, but there were actually a few violent altercations at the time. Several clowns - many of them teenagers - in multiple countries were arrested because of attacks and/or threats of violence against others, and dozens were reported to have been carrying weapons such as bats and axes in the middle of the day.
Eventually, the weird fad slipped away about as subtly as it arrived... but not for long.
Now, the face-painted freaks are back, and they're threatening to terrorise the streets of Australia during Halloween next week.
On Facebook, a group called "Clown Purge Sydney" recently posted a rather menacing status asking "Who's going trick or treating?"
It is believed that the group may be planning to dress as clowns much like those that were seen in 2016 in order to spook people while they're out celebrating Halloween - but no clear plans have been set out on the Facebook page. An earlier post saw them discussing potential locations for their antics, but, again, it doesn't appear as if anything was confirmed (at least, not on the public forum).
Some people obviously took the group as a joke, and posted funny comments on the status - but others weren't so happy about the message.
"I don't even know why you clowns are doing this, what are you trying to do, scare us?" wrote one person. "Well, it's stupid. Get a job."
Hopefully, if anything does actually happen, it won't be anywhere near as bad as the episodes that happened in the past.
Four out of every five US states had at least one report of clown activity in 2016, and Great Britain also saw some particularly worrying incidents.
In the UK, a 17-year-old was jailed after terrorising a pregnant woman. The teenager had chased the woman and her partner down the road while brandishing a foot-long axe. Luckily, he was caught and charged with brandishing a lethal weapon.
In another instance, a 13-year-old boy was arrested for scaring people in the street. One witness, a 17-year-old girl, spoke of her terror when she said that, "As I saw the full clown costume, I noticed the mask and I just turned round and ran back up to the top of the street and every time I was looking over my shoulder it was still chasing me." The boy was in possession of a knife at the time, and was given a warning about his behaviour but eventually released.
If the clowns do make a resurgence, make sure to be vigilant. Some of the people in costume are just being pranksters, but others could pose a serious danger to you, and so it's important to make police aware if you think somebody could be in trouble.

A suburban Illinois community was left in shock after a 15-year-old boy was arrested following a fatal stabbing shortly after being caught on camera prowling local homes dressed as a creepy killer clown.
Tragically, an elderly local was killed, and the teenager was taken into custody by Illinois State Police following the attack in East St. Louis.
On Monday evening, August 3, residents spotted a person roaming through the neighborhood in a clown costume.
Eerie CCTV footage captured the masked teenager approaching a resident's front porch around 9:11PM, leaning toward the Ring doorbell camera before he left a chilling audio message, saying: “I've been looking for you.”
According to resident Lee Palmer, who shared the footage, the masked person lingered on the property for several minutes before creeping around to the back of the house.
He told a local news outlet: "I couldn't believe it. He was dressed in the clown outfit."
He also added that the encounter was deeply alarming for his elderly mother who was home alone at the time.
Other neighbors reported seeing the teenager going door to door throughout the area and terrifyingly glaring into windows while carrying a large knife.
Less than an hour after the terrifying doorbell interaction, local police responded around 10:00PM to reports of a body lying in the road, just blocks away from where the clown was spotted.
St. Clair County Coroner Calvin Dye Sr. later identified the victim as 78-year-old John Wesley Allen Sr., of St. Louis. Coroner reports confirmed that Allen died from multiple stab wounds sustained during the violent incident.
Following an intensive investigation into the surrounding neighborhood and the surveillance video circulating on social media, Illinois State Police announced the arrest of the 15-year-old suspect on Tuesday.
Investigators believe the teenager in custody is the same individual seen in the Ring footage wearing the clown outfit and carrying the weapon.
Authorities have not yet released the identity of the minor due to his age.
Cops have not disclosed a clear motive for the attack, what brought the teenager to the neighborhood, or whether he had any prior connection to the victim.
The investigation remains active as state and local police work to determine the full circumstances behind the deadly incident.
