Over the course of 2020, a great many people stuck indoors during lockdown decided to rock some new and interesting hairstyles, with barbers shut and time to pass.

Some of us have dyed our hair a wide variety of crazy new colors, while others grabbed the nearest electric shaver and simply buzzed it all off. Even more have grown out their hair and have given up trimming their beards.

But now a bizarre new beard trend is spreading on social media, and it's looking like it's going to be the defining style of 2021... for better or for worse.

Per The Daily Mail, the new facial hair trend is known as "the monkey tail", and involves men shaving one side of their cheek bare while leaving the other hairy.

This means that the beard trails down from one sideburn, along the jawline and chin, before curling up around the side of the mouth and ending above the top lip to create a strange spiral-shaped beard.

According to The Mail, the trend was first popularised by MLB baseball player Mike Fiers back in 2019, who modeled his own monkey tail beard on the field during a game.

But with many people stuck indoors due to lockdown restrictions in the midst of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, a number of other people have decided to emulate the style, and have even shared their results on social media.

This comes not long after the rapper Drake also jumped on the bandwagon and debuted a new look on Instagram.

On the evening of Monday, January 4, the 34-year-old musician took to his official account to share a picture of his new hair with his 73.9 million followers on his Instagram stories.

In a now-deleted selfie, Drake can be displaying his new reverse-mullet hairstyle; boasting a shaved back and sides and a long fringe, and with the heart design which he had shaved into his hair earlier last year still intact. He captioned the post simply: "BIG #MOOD"
