A couple who feared they might have the same father has finally received the results of a long-awaited DNA test.

Carly and Mercedes from Ontario, Canada, first made headlines when they announced on TikTok that there was a chance they could be half-sisters.

The couple had been dating for two years when a chat with their moms made them suspect that they might be blood relatives. It turned out that there was a chance both Carly and Mercedes' mothers had slept with the same man. As if that wasn't coincidence enough, there was also a possibility that the man in question was both of their fathers.

"When u find out 2 years into dating that ur moms both slept with the same guy," they captioned a TikTok post. The couple also asked their followers: "Should we take a DNA test?"

After sharing the crazy story on TikTok, things went from bad to worse as many followers began commenting that they had always thought the couple looked like twins.

"If we’re actually related is it wrong to stay together?" Carley and Mercedes asked their followers in a comment. The response was mixed. One person thought it would be okay, saying: "The only problem is society. They can't have kids together so what issues can it cause."

Another was outraged, writing: "Are you serious? Are you trying to justify INCEST?"

Desperate for the truth, the women decided to find out once and for all whether they were half-sisters by taking a DNA test from 23andme.

Once they'd taken the test, the pair had a nerve-wracking five-week wait before the results came back, during which time they did not put their relationship on hold.

Now, in an interview with the Daily Star, the couple has revealed that they know the results of the test.

"We were very anxious and the thought of potentially being related was horrifying but we just tried to keep ourselves busy. We’ve gone our whole relationship without knowing that this could have been a possibility so it seemed easy enough to just continue on like normal but it was always at the back of our minds," they shared.

However, thankfully, the DNA test result revealed that Carly and Mercedes are not blood relatives.

"It’s definitely taken away a lot of stress and anxiety," they said, adding: "We’ve finally been able to breathe for the first time in what feels like forever. We couldn’t imagine going the rest of our lives without knowing."

The pair also shared the happy news in a TikTok video which has racked up over 1.3 million views. In the clip, the pair celebrate and hug one another with relief.
