Nursery rhymes may seem like adorable, innocuous little songs we all learned as children and never gave much thought to the lyrics of - but it seems that some have some pretty dark meanings behind them.

Most people have probably heard of 'Ring a Ring o' Roses' potentially being about the plague, but 'It's Raining, It's Pouring' probably isn't one you'd think had a hidden backstory.

After all, it's just about bad weather, right?

Wrong.

A TikToker who goes by the handle @stupidlittlegenius has taken to the video-sharing platform to reveal that the popular little ditty is actually way darker than any of us realized.

The nursery rhyme's lyrics go: "It's raining, it's pouring, the old man is snoring. He went to bed and bumped his head and couldn't get up in the morning."

Ruining all our childhoods in one flew swoop, she explained: "Although it doesn't describe any specific person, it does tell us a cautionary tale.

"Surprisingly this rhyme has nothing to do with the weather at all.

"In actual fact, the old man liked a good drink, and 'it's raining and pouring' refers to the alcoholic drinks being poured very liberally like it's raining cocktails and shots. That's right, the old man was drunk, very drunk."

If you thought that was the worst of it, sadly it isn't - as things got even worse for the drunk old man.

"Anyway, after drinking so much that he couldn't stay awake, he started nodding off and snoring so he decided it's time to sleep it off.

"But, by this point, he was so inebriated, he probably couldn't even walk in a straight line. So, when he went to bed, he stumbled, fell, or otherwise drunkenly bumped his head.

"And that must have been some bump because he couldn't get up in the morning, because well... he was dead."

She explained that the reason the old man never managed to get up again was because he'd suffered "major head trauma" as a result of his fall.

Finally, she added: "A cautionary tale to remind us when it’s raining and pouring alcoholic beverages, don’t drink so much that you bump your head - or you could end up dead!"

Wise advice indeed, but probably not something we needed to know at preschool age...

Understandably, people were left horrified by the realization that the nursery rhyme was about an old guy's drunken death, and took to the comments to share their thoughts.

One wrote: "Why did my 2yr old self have to sing these nursery rhymes," while another added: "My childhood is officially ruined."

Some assumed the rhyme was a cautionary tale against going to bed after a head injury or concussion, writing: "I always assumed it was about not going to sleep with a concussion cuz he slipped in the rain, bumped his head, and went to sleep and couldn't get up."

Another agreed, adding: "When I was a kid and questioned this I was told it's to tell you never to sleep with a concussion or soon after banging your head?"

Either way, that's definitely not the cute nursery rhyme we thought it was anymore...
