A boss' new workplace rule has gone viral on social media after it was shared online by an unimpressed employee.

Taking to Reddit to share a photo of the employee notice, user 'MinionsAndWineMum' captioned their post: "Shout out the worst place I ever worked." They added that they - "of course" - were working for minimum wage.

The post featured a photo of a notice put up by their boss informing employees of a new workplace rule on lateness.

"For every minute you are late for work, you will be required to work for 10 minutes after 6pm," adding: "For example, if you arrive at 10:02, you will have to stay an extra 20 minutes until 6:20pm."

The passive-aggressive note then adds: "Thanks".

After being posted on Reddit's antiwork forum, it wasn't long before the post went viral, amassing more than 70,000 upvotes and over 5,000 comments from other social media users who were very unimpressed with the new office rule.

"Some people just love exerting whatever little power they have," one Redditor wrote. "If whoever wrote this note was able to let go of their ego for 5 minutes, they would realize how hilariously pathetic, petty, and sad this is. Unfortunately for whoever works there, that is not the case."

A second commenter added: "I mean, if it's minute to minute, like late for five minutes will increase work for five minutes, that's understandable. S***ty, but understandable. But 1 to 10? That's just out of line."

Other Redditors suggested the employee use the rule to their advantage to claim overtime, but others were quick to shut down those ideas as they suspected the extra work would be unpaid.

To which, one person shared more valuable advice: "I assume they plan for this to be unpaid time. Which is illegal.

"I've said this before. A lot of jobs depend on you not knowing the rules and assuming that you boss knows them better then you. They also depend on you going 'F*** it. It's not worth fighting'." They then added: "One thing I learned in the Navy. If you do something often enough, it becomes your job."

Now, I'm all for starting work on time, but none of us should live to work. Sometimes life will occasionally get in the way of our day-to-day routine and result in us being a few minutes late for work. And if you don't have a manager who can sympathize with that, I think it's time to search for another job.
