Footage of a manager refusing to let diners leave without tipping the waitress has sparked a debate online.

Tipping culture has become a massive hot topic on social media with many claiming that the practice, especially in the United States, has now gotten out of hand.

While it may be optional, tipping makes up a large part of service workers' salaries in America. A 15-20% tip is considered standard, and anything under 20% is often seen as a "bad" tip.

One particular video that is now doing rounds reveals an unnamed restaurant manager confronting some customers and demanding that they give a tip to their waitress.

Check out the TikTok below:

The clip - shared by @gladys_nicole on TikTok - is captioned: "A group of men not tipping the waitress after HOURS of beer and pool table time. Restaurant manager MADE SURE she was paid!"

It shows the man talking to three guys, saying: "In English, it’s tipping in Espanol, and Spanish it’s…so let’s say you get cerveza you pay for pool," while pointing across the area.

"Don’t forget her, you gotta give her a little bit. Comprende?" he said to the customers, to which one of them pointed to confirm which server they were supposed to tip. "Si, for her," the manager continues, before adding, "But that right now is zero."

He then holds up a zero sign to the customer, before talking about how long the men have been there playing pool. "You gotta give her, you gotta give her some money man," he repeats while using another gesture for cash.

Gladys records the men as they leave the establishment as the manager goes up to the server. She also shared an overlay text that provides additional context into the situation: "He caught them before they left. They had the pool table with drinks for HOURS and did not tip the waitress Bad [peach emoji] manager.'"

As of this writing, the video amassed 1.6 million views on the social media platform. While the TikToker applauded the manager's actions, many viewers disagreed.

"That would just make sure I'm not tipping," one user revealed, and another chimed in: "I worked in a restaurant for ten years. This tipping is getting out of hand."

A third user shared: "What's really going manager POV: 'We do not and will not give them a raise so that is where customers come in so I need you to do your part now.'" And, a fourth person added: "I would have left and disputed the whole charge with the credit card company and the restaurant can get $0 too."

However, some people admire the man for looking out for his employees, as one user stated that he is "the type of manager you wanna work for".

A second person said "I love this," and then exclaimed: "IF YOU DONT GOT MONEY TO TIP TAKE YOUR BROKE A** HOME." Meanwhile, a third noted: "The point he’s making is she spent all night on them and she got 0 tips. If someone serves you all night man bruh $20 is [the] bare minimum."

Would you tip a server if the manager said they wouldn't let you leave until you did? Share your thoughts!
