A genderqueer mom has revealed the touching moment her agender child "came out" as a boy.
Dr Kyl Myers, who moved to Sydney from the US with her husband Brent Courtney in November 2020, revealed that their son Zoomer had been raised entirely gender-neutral for the first four years of his life.
They said that he told them something "quite special" during a "pronoun check" last March.
"I asked, 'What pronouns are you into for yourself these days, Zoomer?' And Zoomer responded, 'I love he/him!'" she revealed on Instagram.
"I smiled [and said], 'that's awesome, Zoomer. I am so happy you found pronouns you love'."
Following the revelation, the couple updated their friends and family as well as Zoomer's school teachers about his new preferred pronouns.
"Everyone got on board and made the pronoun switch," Myers said.
However, because Zoomer was raised gender-neutral, his parents have admitted that they do occasionally still refer to him as "they", but this is something which Zoomer doesn't mind.
"We caught ourselves using they/them and quickly corrected to he/him. Zoomer told me once, 'It's okay. I like they/them, too'," she wrote.
Meyers explained that while Zoomer has implied what his preferred gender is, "I want to remind folks that sharing Z's pronouns doesn't give any information about his reproductive anatomy.
"I made sure Z had all the pronouns to try on, to hear being used, to put in piles - Not for me; Maybe; I like; I love," she explained.
The doting mother made a point of sitting that Zoomer is free to change his preferred pronouns at any point in his life.
"Zoomer knows he can use he/him pronouns for the rest of his life, alternate pronouns like I do, forego pronouns, or invent new ones. The gender creative adventure doesn't stop here," she wrote.
Meyers, who herself identifies as genderqueer, started writing about "gender creative" parenting in 2015, and she has even released a book on the subject titles Raising Them.
She said that she ultimately advocates for the "mountains of evidence showing how harmful the gender binary can be to children."
