Although it's a career path that I would never want to go down, I do have a lot of time and respect for teachers. It must be hard to control a classroom of annoying, hormonal and mouthy teenagers on top of trying to teach them about subjects that they have little-to-no interest in (AKA Algebra).
However, while the majority of teachers are wholly professional individuals who are there to try and shape the leaders of the future, some do forget about their code of conduct.
As a former high school pupil, I know what teenagers can be like. Don't ask me why, but plenty of students - predominately boys - feel like there is a chance that their teachers might fancy them and engage in some form of sexual activity with them. Of course, in the majority of cases, this doesn't tend to be the case. But, there are those rare occasions when it does actually happen.
A married middle school science teacher has been arrested for allegedly engaging in a sexual relationship with a 14-year-old male pupil. Stephanie Peterson was arrested on Wednesday morning in her home in New Smyrna, Florida, after the boy had come forward and confided in his parents.
The 8th grader told them that his 26-year-old teacher, whose married name is Stephanie Ferri, picked him up from home at 11pm and spent hours with him in private after school. The student also alleges that Peterson sent him nude images of herself and supplied him with marijuana and a 'bowl to smoke it'.
The boy is also reported to have told his parents that the relationship with his teacher made his grades suffer.
Peterson has now been booked into county jail on a charge of lewd or lascivious battery and one count of transmitting harmful materials to a child. Volusia County Sheriff's Office announced the arrest on their Facebook page.
According to investigators, it's alleged that the relationship between Peterson and the boy began in November and she resigned from her job on Monday, a day before she was arrested.
According to reports, Peterson told the boy that he could not tell anyone about their relationship when they were together.
The teacher is married to her husband Brandon and they have been married since 2015 and do not have any children together. After her arrested, they both deleted their social media profiles.
Peterson was booked into county jail on a $25,000 bond and it's not been confirmed when her trial will start.
Peterson can have no complaints about her arrest, seeing as it was a huge breach of trust, let alone being completely illegal. Given that she will now be a registered sex offender, I doubt she'll be teaching anytime soon and, seeing as she has also had an affair, she may lose her relationship as well.
