People on social media have been left stunned after learning that ceiling fans actually possess a dual-purpose switch.
Anthony Bertoncin, a 20-year-old TikToker from Kansas City, Missouri, shared the revelation after explaining that he's struggled with the temperature in his room for years and constantly had his ceiling fan on in a bid to stop the problem.
But until recently, he had no idea that it was actually the cause of his troubles.
"Today, I finally realized that my ceiling fan has been making my room a sauna for six years," Bertoncin said in a now-viral clip, which has received over 2.2 million views.
The 20-year-old finally realized his mistake while on a Facetime call with a friend.
"While we're FaceTiming, he switches the direction of his fan to heat his room in the winter," Bertoncin said. "I've been suffering for six years, and I just now realizing my f*** up today."
Today's Homeowner detailed the simple logic behind the switch, explaining that the counterclockwise motion of a ceiling fan pushes air down and that's what enables it to create a noticeable breeze.
When the fan is rotating clockwise, however, the switch produces the opposite effect and pushes hot air upward, making ceiling fans useful gadgets even in the winter too.
TikTok users who had never heard of the feature soon flooded the comments section to express their shock that they'd never heard about the feature before.
"What type of sorcery is this?!" one wrote.
"I never knew that existed," said another.
"This man solved why my room has been so dang hot all the time," wrote a third.
However, there were some TikTok users who were simply shocked that so many people didn't know about this basic feature of fans.
"How did so many people not know this???" wrote one user.
"Counterclockwise In the summer, clockwise in the winter," added another.
