This week, social media users were put off by a commercial for Peloton exercise bikes, with many comparing the relationship it depicted to an unintentionally abusive one.

The video, entitled: 'The Gift That Gives Back', was uploaded to Peloton's official YouTube channel on November 21. The video's description states: "This holiday, give your loved ones the opportunity to discover their strength, whenever they want it, all year long. Give them a gift that goes beyond the Holiday season. Give the gift of Peloton."

The video shows a young woman being given an exercise bike as a present by her husband. Despite already being rather slim, she engages in a frantic exercise routine in a bid to impress her husband; which struck many as being a little shady.

The actor, who portrayed the husband of the woman in the ad, has broken his silence over how his onscreen relationship appeared abusive, after a number of Twitter users accused his character of being misogynistic and fat-shaming.

In an interview with Psychology Today, actor and elementary teacher Sean Hunter stated "As my face continues to be screenshot online, I wonder what repercussions will come back to me. I pride myself on being a great teacher and developing actor, and I can only hope that this affects neither. I’m grappling with the negative opinions as none of them have been constructively helpful."

He continued: "Unfortunately, the problem is that viewers can mistake an actor as that person after they’ve seen them on television instead of a person given a script with no opinion on what they are being told to portray ... The aftermath of the commercial has left me with more questions than answers, and this is only half the story. I reflect on what my co-actor must be dealing with, as she’s the other 25 seconds of the story."

The actor has now set up an Instagram account for his character called 'Peloton Husband' - why not check it out?
