The traditional hot cross buns have already been spotted on supermarket shelves but it has been met with mixed opinions among shoppers.
With Christmas only just in our rear-view mirrors, many of us are probably still indulging in leftover food or cleaning up the remaining wrapping paper on the floor.
However, despite being nearly four months away, many supermarkets in Australia apparently believe it is time to start getting ready for the next big Christian holiday; Easter.
Many people noticed that on Boxing day - just 24 hours after we've all celebrated the birth of Jesus - many shops have begun to pop hot cross buns on the shelves.
Check out the buns on the shelves:As reported by News.com.au, both Woolworths and Coles decided to bring back the tasty delicacies early.
The outlet reported that Woolworths announced it has brought back its hot cross buns with Cadbury Caramilk chips as well as chocolate chip brioche buns and decadent fruit hot cross buns. The apple and cinnamon flavor and their gluten-free option have also returned
"We sold more than 1.8 million individual hot cross buns the first week they were on sale last year, and we anticipate the same as customers look to close off 2022 with a delicious and favorite treat," Donald Keith, Woolworths merchandise manager explained.
However many shoppers took to their social media platforms to complain about the move. Some were baffled that the Christmas treats have already been replaced with Easter goods in the space of one day.
One user said: "I’ll be writing a sternly worded letter to @AlboMP. Something must be done. Boxing Day is too early for hot cross buns in supermarkets."
Another declared: "NO COLES! I would love a time of the year without the next consumerist holiday being extremely prematurely shoved in our faces."
A third commented: "Hot Cross buns on Boxing day???? Seriously?? Then again if you really like them why can't you get them anytime you want?"
A fourth shared: "Yep. The hot cross buns first appeared Boxing Day. I'm not complaining, because I love them (as long as they don't have citrus peel ) but it does make them seem less special when they're available for nearly 1/3 of the year."
However, many customers were excited by its arrival, with one user writing: "It's Boxing Day and they're selling hot cross buns. Every time I hear someone complain about how early they're on the shelves, I'm going to go buy a 6 pack. 'Who's buying them??' 'Me.'"
Another declared: "I cannot believe anyone actually gives a s*** when hot cross buns are on the shelves??? I f***ing love hot cross buns and would eat them every damn day if I could."
A third commented: "I have an irrational hatred for people who complain about supermarkets already selling hot cross buns. We are specks on a spinning ball in space and we’re all having a pretty bad time at the moment, I’ll buy three dozen of them today if I want."
It's clear to see that while some shoppers are delighted at the early release, some are already thinking about whether the baked goods will still be here by the time it's Easter.
