Brits everywhere are taking to social media after opening up their Easter Eggs this morning.

As the world celebrates Easter this weekend, a holiday synonymous with creepy bunnies, chocolate eggs, and - of course - the resurrection of Jesus Christ, it's worth taking a moment to delve into the rich history behind this widely observed occasion.

Easter, also known as Resurrection Sunday, has deep roots that stretch back thousands of years. Its origins can be traced to ancient pagan festivals celebrating the arrival of spring, which links to the symbolism of new life, though for a lot of Christians, it holds a particularly important religious meaning.

Many believers take to church to witness Easter Sunday Mass, celebrating the central event of the Christian faith - the resurrection of Jesus Christ. During this time of celebration, they take the time to participate in spiritual vow renewal as well as sharing the Bread of Life.

However, as with many festivities over the years, the occasion has evolved into a multifaceted, slightly more commercialized celebration with Easter being marked by the sale of chocolate eggs, candies, and other themed merchandise.

For many British folks though, what was once a fun treat in the morning has now changed as many have been left disappointed after opening their chocolate Easter Eggs this morning.

Taking to Twitter, better known now as X, they discussed exactly why in a series of tweets.

"Remember when Easter eggs came with a mug? I miss my KitKat mug," wrote one user, while another added: "Can anyone else remember when Easter eggs used to come in a mug? (or did I make this up?)."

A third also agreed, chiming in with: "Remember when Easter eggs [actually] came with a mug or egg cups!!!"

And this user also added that while in the past, you would get a range of exciting treats, now you'd be "lucky if you get a chocolate bar with your egg."

One X-user also included an image of the mugs in their tweet alongside the caption: "Remember when you use to get mugs with your Easter eggs those were the days."

And it's not just on X that people were left reeling.

Over on Reddit, a lot of Brits were appalled too.

"All the Easter eggs and not one comes with a mug. I am appalled! What has Easter come to!" wrote this user, to which they got a strong response off of others who also thought the same thing.

"I weep for this new generation. No Easter egg mugs, no toys in breakfast cereal boxes, and the quality of Kinder Egg toys has gone right down the toilet! This is the fall of our great civilization!" this Redditer added.

A third brought us back to reality though stating: "Aren’t we the real mugs for putting up with this corporate bulls***? The world is gone to s***. This isn’t what Jesus died on the cross for."

It's true. He didn't.
