While some people dream of the day they'll start having babies with the person they love, others find the idea of pregnancy and childbirth low-key horrifying. Giving up your body for nine months to an alien foetus? No thanks. Putting several organs through varying degrees of torture, all to be greeted with a slimy, screaming little baby that is now your duty to look after for your whole life? Nuh-ah.

While many women grapple with the true reality of these fears, rarely do they think of how that could all change if they were carrying not one baby, but two or three. Finding out that you've got twins or triplets literally multiplies the stress/anxiety/pressure/excitement that you're already feeling. And don't even get me started on quadruplets, quintuplets and however more possibilities there are.

As with any pregnancy, every mother has their own unique experience. But because of the rarity of twins and triplets, mothers who have carried multiple babies at once will have different motherhood journeys entirely. From greeting the news with excitement to some other, uh, unusual reactions, here are 15 stories submitted to Whisper from women who found out they were pregnant with more than just one baby.

Well, as dramatic and exciting as the stories may be, it's safe to say that no-one ever really expects to hear the news that they are carrying more than one baby. And if you've just found out yourself that you're having twins – count yourself lucky, it means you're healthy and that you are a more evolved kind of human. Seriously! Studies have shown that more "developed" human beings have higher chances of conceiving twins or triplets because it's a genetic advantage for the wellbeing of our species. If you're twinning, you're winning!

One month after giving birth, most women are beginning to find their feet as new mothers. But what if you gave birth to two more children just 26 days after having your first baby?

This is exactly what happened to one young woman in Bangladesh. Arifa Sultana gave birth to a baby in late February, but 26 days later was rushed again to another hospital after feeling pain in her stomach.

After examining her, doctors discovered that she was still pregnant with twins. An emergency Caesarean was performed and the two children, and their 20-year-old mother, were found to be healthy and were discharged with no complications after four days in the hospital.

Sultana had a condition called uterus didelphys, which means she has two uteruses. Uterus didelphys is a uterine malformation where the uterus is present as a paired organ when the embryogenetic fusion of the Müllerian ducts fails to occur. As a result, there is a double uterus with two separate cervices, and rarely a double vagina as well.

It occurs in one in a million women, according to the National Institutes of Health, but there are varying estimates as to how common the condition is. For it not to be discovered before the woman gives birth is even less common. According to Dr Sheila Poddar, the gynaecologist who performed the Caesarean, Sultana and her husband are "very poor" and she had "never had an ultrasound before".

"When the patient came in we performed an ultrasound on her and found there were twin babies," Dr Poddar told the BBC. "We were very shocked and surprised. I have never observed something like this before ... She had no idea that she had two other babies. We carried out a caesarean and she delivered twins, one male and female. The babies and her are all healthy. I am very, very happy that everything went well."

However, one gynaecologist in Singapore said uterus didelphys is "not as rare as people think".

"If you go for a scan beforehand it would be very obvious to see two sets of uteruses. But obviously, they are from a more rural area [and might not have access to ultrasound scanning]," Dr Christopher Ng of the GynaeMD Clinic told the BBC. "[It's likely that] three eggs ovulated and were fertilised at the same time during her fertile period which resulted in three embryos."

According to AFP news agency, Sultana said she was happy with her children but was worried that raising them would put a strain on her financial situation, given that her husband earns less than 6,000 taka (£53: $95) a month working as a labourer.

"It was a miracle from Allah that all my children are healthy. I will try my best to keep them happy," the father said.

An Alabama woman who was born with two uterus has revealed that she is pregnant with a girl in each one.

Kelsey Hatcher, who was also born with two cervixes, has a busy life. She and her husband Caleb both work and are already parents to three children - ages seven, four, and two.

They thought their little family was complete until Kelsey discovered that she was pregnant last spring after she went to her first ultrasound appointment.

The mom was stunned to learn that she was carrying two babies and immediately passed this information to her husband, telling him: "I said, 'Well, there’s two of them in there.' And [my husband] said, 'You’re lying.’ I said, ‘No, I’m not,'" per local outlet WVTM 13.

However, what left her doctors shocked wasn't the fact that she was having two babies, but that she had a double uterus - two functional ones, with a fetus in each of them.

According to the Mayo Clinic, a double uterus is a rare condition that is "present at birth" in some women and occurs when the two small tubes that grow and create together "don't join completely" and "each one develops into a separate organ".

Women with a double uterus often have triumphant pregnancies - but unfortunately, they are also more likely to experience a miscarriage or premature birth.

Her obstetrician, Dr. Shweta Patel, said that Kelsey's case is so uncommon that she never would have anticipated seeing this in a patient. "Very, very rare, yes. OBGYNs go their whole careers without seeing anything like this," Patel said.

UAB Dr. Richard Davis, who deals with high-risk pregnancies, also spoke with the publication and stated that "maybe three per 1,000 women might" have a double cervix or double uteruses.

"And then the probability of you having a twin in each horn is really crazy," Davis added.

Kelsey’s uteri could contract at different times, meaning she could give birth to each baby girl hours or even days apart.

"When she goes into labor, if she does, then we will have to monitor each uterus and see which one’s contracting and if they’re doing sort of almost the same or they’re different," Davis noted.

Furthermore, Patel explained that because the mom's circumstances are so rare medics don't have an official medical term for referring to the two babies. "I think medically, this is such a rare thing, that I think we don’t have a better way of describing it besides still calling them twins," she shared.

While the doting mom is enthusiastic about her brood being extended by two more, she and her husband are certain that the two infants will be their final pregnancy.

"The third one was our last one. [And] though we're grateful for the blessings for sure... this will definitely be the end," she quipped.

Kelsey revealed that her due date for her daughters is later this year on Christmas Day.

I can only imagine that giving birth for the first time must be at the same time terrifying as it is exciting. Sure, we hear all the stories of glowing mothers and what it's like to look upon your precious mini-me for the first time on the ultrasound machine, but there's also the less glamorous things that people don't want you to hear about. Like, about losing control of your bladder and the way pregnancy can totally deform your body to the point where you wonder if it'll ever be the same again. Well, there's one woman who had barely a chance to register all that after giving birth to her firstborn before she was forced to go through it all again. 28-year-old Eliza Curby gave birth to her son Charlie in January 2016, and only six weeks later, found out she was pregnant again. It was completely unexpected for the young mother, who was only really mentally preparing herself for how to take the next steps with her six-week-old old firstborn son. But sure enough, she gave birth to a set of twins on Christmas Eve of 2016, when Charlie was not even one year old. "For the first six months, I don't remember much, I was running on empty,' Eliza told the Daily Mail Australia. "But with the one year anniversary coming up, I can finally feel like I've nearly got this." "There is so much I've learned over the past year.
