An Uber Eats driver has sparked a heated Twitter debate after he filmed himself crying over receiving a small tip.
In a viral TikTok, the driver revealed that he had spent an hour driving only to receive a $1.19 (£0.84) tip.
After getting upset over the tip, he said in the clip: "I wish people knew what it was like to deliver for Uber Eats, DoorDash, all these other companies. I just spent an hour driving around for a $1.19 tip.
"Would it hurt y'all to tip us? Throw us $5? I got a $1.19 tip and $2 tip from the app," the delivery driver continued. "What is that? It's not even enough to cover gas. How am I supposed to survive like that?"
Watch the viral TikTok below:He then explained that he was homeless and had been unable to pay his rent for the past four months.
He went on: "Everything fell apart on me and I haven't been able to sustain myself, provide for myself, and these are essential services.
"I wish people knew what it was like, I just wish they understood what it was like to drive for these services," he said of delivering the food.
The TikTok video did not go unnoticed, and at the time of writing, it has been liked over 218K times and received over 13K times.
Reacting to the driver's viral clip, which was also posted on Twitter, one social media user wrote: "This isn't a tipping problem this is a pay problem. The employer should be responsible not the consumer."
A second added: "They have begged ppl to support restaurants during the pandemic. The fee the company charges is already $6+. The customers aren’t employing ppl. This shouldn't be our burden. The customer pays for the restaurants' food, the company's service and the living wage of employees?"
A third wrote: "We need to stop guilting working class ppl into paying tips they can't afford just to supplement for corps not paying living wages. A tip shldnt be the main source of income. These corps are profiting millions, if not billions per yr and cld pay their employees a living wage [sic]."
However, not everyone who saw the video believed that it was the companies themselves who were at fault, and sided with the TikTok driver in saying that people should tip more.
One Twitter user wrote: "Literally you should bare minimum be tipping $5-6. For me, if it'd be 15ish minute delivery that's what I’ll do. If it's further away, I'll up the tip accordingly. I don't understand why they use % on the apps anyways. Just make it $ amounts."
A second added: "I do a $10 minimum tip on deliveries I ain't gonna demand people do an hour's worth of work for less than that *I* didn't accept doing an hour's worth of work for less than that."
