A store clerk in Kentucky has been left flummoxed after serving a customer who had cut a slit out of her face mask in order to make it "easier to breathe". Seriously.

Clerk Joe Samaan was working his shift at an S J Food Mart outside of Lexington when he spotted a female customer entering the store wearing a bizarre face mask. Pulling out his cell phone to record the incident, the video shows the woman entering the store in order to pay for her gas.

Unable to stay quiet about the ludicrous alteration, Joe asked the woman where she got her unique PPE.

Check out Joe's run-in with the woman below:

Responding to Joe's question, the woman says: "Well since we have to wear them and it makes it hard to breathe, this [cutting it] makes it a lot easier to breathe."

Amazed by the response, Samaan sarcastically replies: "Yeah sure I’ll do that too, thanks for the advice."

Joe later shared the hilarious clip to his TikTok (@joegotti96) page, where it has been viewed over 4.2 million times.

And after watching the clip, people online were far from impressed by the woman's crafting skills:

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends "wearing cloth face coverings in public settings where other social distancing measures are difficult to maintain (e.g., grocery stores and pharmacies), especially in areas of significant community-based transmission."

The CDC also advises "the use of simple cloth face coverings to slow the spread of the virus and help people who may have the virus and do not know it from transmitting it to others."

When it comes to wearing face mask, the CDC hs also provided the following tips. Your face mask should:

  • Fit snugly but comfortably against the side of the face.
  • Be secured with ties or ear loops.
  • Include multiple layers of fabric.
  • Allow for breathing without restriction.
  • Be able to be laundered and machine dried without damage or change to shape.
