A woman has stunned social media users after revealing that she only showers when she wants to wash her hair - which is twice a week.
While many people only wash their hair once or twice a week, most people would probably say that they wash the rest of their body daily, right?
Well, that's not the case for Allison, who goes by the handle @abmccarthy5757 on TikTok, who took to the social media platform to reveal that she only showers twice a week, too.
She posted a video explaining why she thought her shower routine was perfectly normal, despite it coming across as shocking to some.
Allison, who is from Boston, said: "So I've recently found out that I am in fact a gross human being and this is because, most girls, when they say that they wash their hair twice a week, they literally mean wash their hair, and they shower every day."
"I only shower once or twice a week. I've gone five days without showering before. Because if I'm getting in the shower, I'm going to wash my hair," she continued.
Check out Allison's TikTok below:"Why would I get in the shower and not wash my hair? But I don't want to wash my hair every day. I've had to start saying that I wash my hair twice a week - but I only shower twice a week," she concluded.
The TikToker's clip went viral on the video-sharing app and has amassed 6.2 million views and 841.3K likes. It has also sparked a debate amongst tens of thousands of online users who couldn't decide what to make of Allison's bold confession.
One critic wrote: "She literally has NO excuse for not showering, she has a skincare routine, gym routine, works as a NURSE, like bffr."
Another also said: "I CANNOT go 24 hours without showering. I refuse to believe this is real."
A third chimed in and commented: "Nooooooo how do you sleep feeling so grimey from the outside???? No!!!"
Meanwhile, some users didn't see anything wrong with showering twice a week, with one person declaring: "Girl same. these comments are wild. Natural body oils [are] a good thing. Y'all showering every day must be stinky people without it."
Another interjected: "Fr like hair washing and special events like going out w friends only. I ain’t showering every day just to go to work or college."
Lastly, one more user stated: "THANK YOU for talking about this. showering is so exhausting!! how do people do it so much???
In a follow-up video, Allison hilariously said that she was "bullied" into purchasing a shower cap on Amazon because some of the commenters were "ruthless".
Many doctors have said that a daily shower is fine for most people - and that more could start to cause skin problems, according to WebMD.
They added that two to three times a week is sufficient in maintaining good health, however "it depends in part on your lifestyle. Someone who spends hours in the hot sun working in the yard or running or biking, will likely need to bathe more often than someone who’s cool and indoors".

A woman has taken to social media to reveal the reasons why she showers just once a week.
TikToker Reina - who goes by the handle @reindrrop on the social media platform - stunned her 7600+ followers when she revealed in a post that she only showers once a week.
In a video that has amassed over 2.7 million views, Reina explained: "I shower once a week. You heard that right. Not just wash my hair once a week - I step into a bathing receptacle once a week."
But why? Well, the TikToker has several reasons why she doesn't like bathing - other than she just "doesn't like it".
"Reason one: the time commitment," she starts off by saying. "From warming the water up, getting into the shower, doing all of the necessary shower things, to getting out of the shower, to drying, to waiting for my hair to dry."
Check out her video below:"Reason two: Wet hair," she added. "I hate the feeling of wet hair. And, no, I can't use a hairdryer because I hate the sound of a hairdryer."
Next up was reason three: "Skin issues." As Reina explained: "Since I started showering less [...] my eczema, my dry scalp - just all my skin issues have gotten better."
And finally: "Reason four: It's not wasteful. Both for water and products."
After explaining in-depth why she chooses to forgo bathing as much as many of us, social media users had A LOT of questions for Reina.
One of the big questions from viewers was about whether or not Reina was smelly as a result of not bathing. Well, in a follow-up post, she gladly answered that.
"Short answer: I probably do [stink]," she explained. "Humans are smelly. And come Saturday - the day before my shower day - I don't recommend that you shove your face into my armpit. It's probably not going to smell good."
However, she then explained that she does not "reek" as she does not sweat a lot and uses deodorant daily. She also says she worked with kids, who are very honest and would inform her if she was smelly.
In another post, Reina responded to one person who asked if her husband minded at all - to which she revealed that he does not.
Overall, Reina says a lot of the issue with her is down to it being a sensory issue - a lot like how some people cannot stand the textures of certain foods or sudden changes in temperature.

A woman has started an online debate after she admitted to only showering three times a week.
After finding out that her friends all showered every day, the mom of two took to Mumsnet to find out if other people thought she was "gross".
But her search for solidarity quickly backfired - as some people in the comments section described her hygiene habits as "grim."
She described how the topic first came up, writing on the forum: "Ok so I'm having a few drinks with friends last night."
She continues: “We are all-female mix of parents and non-parents. One friend mentions she is struggling to find time for a shower every day since she had her baby. I said ‘well I don't shower every day without a young baby’. All of my friends looked at me in horror."
The woman was shocked to discover that all of her pals showered every day.
"Apparently even the ones with kids shower daily," she wrote.
To make sure people were getting the full picture, the woman went on to describe her weekly routine.
"Full disclosure I have two dd [darling daughters] one under five and I work part-time. I shower on workdays plus one extra day so usually three times a week," she explained, before adding: "My days off usually consist of playing at home, walking [the] dog, school run, and maybe [the] park.
"I would shower extra if exercising/having sex/on period etc. I bath my dc [darling children] three times a week. My oh [other half] works out every weekday so he does shower more than me."
She finished by asking the forum if she was being "disgusting".
Unfortunately for her, quite a few users thought that she was.
“Personally I think 3 times a week is pretty grim, sorry," one wrote, adding "I am a shower everyday person. I can’t get going in the morning without one to be honest.”
"I shower every day. Its just 'normal' too," agreed another.
Meanwhile, for one user even a daily shower didn't cut it.
"Twice a day for me (three times when been to the gym or for a swim, etc). My husband is the same," they wrote.
However, others were more supportive.
"That’s absolutely fine. If you don’t smell then there is no need to shower," one commented.
"There is nothing wrong with showering 3 times a week if you don't need a shower on the in-between days," added another.
So, what's your take on the situation? Let us know in the comments section!

Showering is something most people do daily, but one woman has gone viral after revealing that she feels good after not bathing for 10 days.
Aydan Jane - who goes by the handle @aydan_jane - both intrigued and confused people after posting a TikTok video about why she only washes herself once every 10 days.
In her video, the 23-year-old had an overlay text that read: "I am living proof that you don’t have to bathe often to look and feel good."
Jane claimed that the only apparent difference is that her hair would be curlier if she washed her hair more regularly. She also explained that she doesn’t smell.
Check out Jane's TikTok below:As of this writing, the video has amassed almost 183,000 likes and 3 million views on the social media platform, with many users sharing their sentiments in their comment section.
Most people in the replies were baffled and said they were not on board with Jane's soap shy bathing schedule
One user wrote: "you don’t HAVE to but even just rinsing off more frequently than 10 days is better for your hygiene I'm [pretty] sure."
Another said: "Hey friend not to be mean but like …. what do u smell like?"
A third commented: "I disagree. I only do this when I'm depressed and lacking motivation."
A fourth user joked: "This is what my mom thinks I mean when I say I haven’t washed my hair…"
However, a few users on the video-sharing app did agree with the creator's video and shared their own opinions.
One user wrote: "10 days isn’t [that] long tbh," to which Jane replied back and said, "fully agree".
Another said: "I literally do not see why ppl are so mad at this. This video made me extremely happy. Thank you :)"
After going viral, Jane responded to questions from users in a follow-up video about why she doesn't bathe frequently and said: "I would argue it’s better for the environment if we shower less because [the] water’s a precious resource."
She also replied to another question on whether she still keeps to her 10-day shower schedule even during her period, saying: "Your period does not make you dirty. Periods are not dirty."
"Also important to note that the vagina is self-cleaning, so you don’t have to clean it - cause it cleans itself," Jane added.

A woman has sparked a debate on social media after revealing how often her friend washes her bra.
Taking to TikTok to share the revelation, Desyr - who users the handle @desyr.reviews on the platform - let slip that her friend confessed to only washing her bras once a year.
"My friend - I'm not gonna name any names - but my friend once told the group chat that she washes her bra once a year," the TikToker says in the video, adding: "I'm now just curious, like, how often does everyone wash their bras? Like, I need to know what the kind of standard is amongst women everywhere. What's the average? What's the most common bra-washing duration? Because apparently, we are not all the same."
Check out the video below:Now, I personally don't own any bras - but even I raised an eyebrow when I heard this, and the comments section certainly reflected my surprise.
As of this writing, the video has amassed more than 800 comments from TikTok users after the video received over 190,000 views. And - perhaps as expected - opinions differed greatly.
There were many people who believed a bra should be washed after every use.
Other TikTokers were a little more lenient with their laundry habits, with some people washing their bras after a few days, and others waiting several weeks to wash their bras:
Other social media users agreed that it all depending on the weather, and that bras require more washes on those particularly hotter and sweatier days:
So there you have it - although it sounds like something we'd all agree on, it turns out bras come with their own rules for each person.
In other news, a woman has recently revealed that she never washes her sheets or her mattress despite them being 100 years old.
Now, the average person spends approximately 56 hours a week in bed, so keeping your place of rest clean is essential to avoid a build-up of bacteria and dust mites.
According to the Good Housekeeping Institute, you should be changing your sheets at least once every two weeks and if you suffer from night sweats or allergies, it's best to up it to once a week just to avoid any harmful triggers.
While a lot of us can't even bear the thought of sleeping in a dirty bed, one woman has recently admitted that she has never washed her sheets or changed her mattress for a new one despite it being around for a century.
Meet Cornelia Bayley, a British woman who lives in a 17th-century manor in Flintshire, north Wales.
Bayley initially bought the 10-bedroom house called Plas Teg back in 1985 and spent a big portion of her life keeping it standing. The 82-year-old has spent thousands and thousands of dollars on upkeep, though her bedding has never really gotten that type of attention.
As per the Daily Mail, Bayley admitted to only cleaning the house once or twice since she acquired it, saying: "200 years ago, there would be 20 or 30 people looking after the house. Now there is just me and the cat."
While appearing on Channel 4's Obsessive Compulsive Cleaners, she revealed that she had never felt the need to wash her bedding or change the mattress, which was 100 years old.
The hosts of the show examined her manor, clearly horrified at the dirt and grime that had piled up over the years.
When asked when the bedding had last been washed, Bayley replied: "Never."
The hosts followed up by asking about the mattress to which she replied: "It could be 100 years old, or something. You know, this is how people used to live years ago – and I still live like that."

When it comes to personal grooming, we all have our own tried and tested methods for keeping ourselves clean, and while the only real requirement is getting the job done, one woman has sparked an intense debate online by opening up about her shower habit.
Alice, who goes by the Twitter handle @Backpainandwine, tweeted: "Help me settle a debate.
"It's normal to shower with your back to the shower right? Not facing the water?" she asked.
While she might have only expected a few replies, the question struck a chord with Twitter users, and soon thousands of people had weighed in on Alice's question.
And one thing is clear from the replies: there is really no one size fits all when it comes to taking a shower.
One Twitter user wrote: "I face the water to keep my hair from getting wet and then spin round and hold my hair out of the way to do my back."
A second concurred, adding: "You face away from the shower unless you’re strange."
Meanwhile, a third Twitter user revealed that they take a shower just like Alice.
They wrote: "I don't like my face in the water at all, unless I've had a terrible day and you do that thing they do in films, where you put your hands on the wall and lean forward with your hair streaming down, like you've just blown up an entire planet and need some time to think [sic]."
A fourth agreed, writing: "i'm back to shower too, I can't stand the water getting into my eyes, and since my back can take hot water much better than the front, it's a no brainer for me [sic]."
However, a fifth Twitter user revealed that they sit somewhere in the middle of the two camps.
They wrote: "Both. Forwards to wash my bod and back to wash my hair."
A sixth agreed, adding: "I do both. Facing when washing front, not facing when washing the back. Side on for each side. Like a watery rotisserie."
All of which begs the question: how do you take a shower?
