Joe Biden has said that he will rejoin the Paris climate agreement on the first day of his presidency if he emerges victorious.
This comes as the US officially withdrew from the agreement under the Trump administration, the BBC reports.
In a tweet posted late on Wednesday, Biden wrote: "Today, the Trump Administration officially left the Paris Climate Agreement. And in exactly 77 days, a Biden Administration will rejoin it."
The 77 days Biden refers to in the tweet is the amount of time between the time of the tweet's posting and Wednesday 20 January 2021, when the 46th president of the US will be inaugurated.
The US's decision to leave the agreement three years ago was slammed by venture investors.
According to Silicon Valley Business Journal, General Catalyst managing director Hemant Taneja said at the time of the US's withdrawal: "I have always believed that, while we can disagree on the scientific premise behind climate change, we should all agree that advanced energy technologies represent one of the biggest economic opportunities.
"To give that up is a threat to American prosperity… Our American companies will be at a huge competitive disadvantage globally if they don’t have a market to rely on in their backyard."
A major plank of the former Vice President's campaign was his $2 trillion climate stimulus package, which is why his promise to rejoin the Paris Agreement should come as no surprise.
The Trump administration's recent withdrawal from the Paris Agreement marks the fulfillment of a promise in what would be the final days of the Republican party's current reign.

In an interview with the Financial Times, Todd Stern, who was the top US climate negotiator during the Obama administration, said: "If Biden wins, then the fact that the withdrawal became final on November 4 really won't matter."
"If Trump wins a second term, then it will have [a] much more lasting impact."
The US is the only country that has left the Paris Agreement since it was established.
