In a stunning development on Sunday (July 21), 81-year-old Biden announced that he will not seek reelection, formally withdrawing from the 2024 presidential race.

This decision leaves the Democratic Party in a challenging position as they now face the task of selecting a new candidate to contest against former POTUS Trump, 78.

Biden made the announcement via his official X account.

Describing his tenure as president has being the "greatest honor" of his life, Biden said: "And while it has been my intention to seek reelection, I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country for me to stand down and to focus solely on fulfilling my duties as President for the remainder of my term."

And while the statement has created a huge fallout on social media, perhaps it is Donald Trump's response that the American people are most eager to see.

Less than an hour after Biden posted his announcement, Trump took to his social media platform Truth Social to share his response.

Trump's full statement can be read in full below:

"Crooked Joe Biden was not fit to run for President, and is certainly not fit to serve - And never was! He only attained the position of President by lies, Fake News, and not leaving his Basement.

"All those around him, including his Doctor and the Media, knew that he wasn’t capable of being President, and he wasn’t - And now, look what he’s done to our Country, with millions of people coming across our Border, totally unchecked and unvetted, many from prisons, mental institutions, and record numbers of terrorists.

"We will suffer greatly because of his presidency, but we will remedy the damage he has done very quickly. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!"

Biden was criticized for his performance against Trump in last month's presidential debate.

The POTUS later put his lacklustre performance down to a hectic schedule which had him traveling "around the world a couple of times" in the days before the debate - admitting that he did "almost fell asleep on stage".

And despite growing calls for him to stand down, Biden remained steadfast that he would be running.
