Despite separating almost a decade ago, Danny DeVito and Rhea Perlman have no intention of officially ending their marriage, with the pair remaining incredibly close and continuing to spend plenty of time together.
Nine years after going their separate ways, DeVito revealed that the former couple still speak every day and regularly get together with their family, even sharing meals at each other's homes.
“We’re always over at her house,” DeVito, who shares children Lucy, 43, Grace, 41, and Jacob, 38, with Perlman, told AARP: The Magazine. “We see the grandchildren together, that kind of stuff.”
Reflecting on their bond, the 81-year-old added: “So that’s a good relationship.”
Although their romantic relationship has ended, DeVito said their commitment to family has remained unchanged.
“No matter what happens in your life, the most important thing is having family and friends,” he said. “Reliable people in our lives who we can talk to, who we can open up to, who we can rely on to be there. I’m very fortunate.”
The pair have shared most of their lives together. They first crossed paths in 1971 when Perlman attended an off-Broadway production featuring DeVito before the group headed out together afterwards.
Looking back on that first meeting, DeVito said they immediately “hit it off.”
“We liked off-Broadway stuff,” he recalled. “We went to movies all the time. We made little movies together—short films.”
The couple married in 1982 and went on to star alongside one another in several projects.
“We had a lot in common, and we fell in love,” DeVito said. “A nice Jewish girl from Brooklyn and an Italian from New Jersey: I cooked and she ate.”
DeVito and Perlman first separated in 2012 before ending their relationship for good in 2017. While they have remained close friends, Perlman previously admitted the transition wasn't easy.
“It was very difficult at first,” the 78-year-old said during a 2023 appearance on Julia Louis-Dreyfus' Wiser Than Me podcast. “It took time for us to come to this, somehow, pretty decent understanding and relationship with each other.”
She also stressed that, despite their split, their family continues to come first.
“We see each other a lot,” Perlman said. “And our family is still the most important thing to both of us.

Twins stars Arnold Schwarzenegger and Danny DeVito have shared a heartwarming picture of their reunion.
The 76-year-old Terminator actor delighted fans on Friday (December 29) by sharing a picture of him with DeVito, 79, and DeVito's daughter Lucy, 40, on the set of their Broadway play, I Need That.
"My brother! It was fantastic to see Danny on Broadway in I Need That," Schwarzenegger wrote in a caption posted on Instagram. "He and Lucy and everybody involved kept the audience entertained, laughing and loving every minute.
"One of the best plays I’ve ever seen, a true spectacle with heart!! I can’t wait to work together again," he concluded.
Check out the reunion below:The actors famously costarred in 1988's Twins, a comedy that saw the pair play genetically engineered brothers named Julius and Vincent Benedict who were separated at birth.
The movie grossed $111 million at the domestic box office upon its release and was the fifth highest-grossing film released that year, according to Box Office Mojo.
Many enthusiastic fans reacted to the reunion which comes 35 years after the film's release. One user penned in the comment section: "If this isn’t the most wholesome photo…"
Another said: "And I‘m just watching TWINS on German television," while a third quipped: "For everyone who might not know: Danny is the small guy on the right, not the tall one in the middle!"
A fourth commented: "I just watched Twins again last week. I loved the scene when they are in the convenience store and Danny is telling Arnold that his chest and back have huge bumps all over, so funny."
The pair were planning for a Twins sequel titled Triplets, which would involve the brothers discovering they are triplets, and additional actors like Eddie Murphy and Tracy Morgan were rumored to join. However, the project was put on the back burner when director Ivan Reitman sadly passed away in February 2022.
Schwarzenegger revealed to the Hollywood Reporter that the late filmmaker's death effectively ended any interest in a sequel. "Jason Reitman literally stopped the project when his father died," he said. "His father wanted to do it really badly. I wanted to do it really badly.
"Danny DeVito wanted to do it really badly. We had the financing. When his father passed away, Jason says, 'I never liked the idea' and put a hold on it," he added.
The It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia star also shot down a Twins reunion in an interview with GQ in November, stating: "Arnold [Schwarzenegger] and I want to work together. We missed Twins 2, because he became governor - which, he should have done Twins 2 instead of becoming governor.
"Now we have a little thing going, a little project that we’ve been chatting about," the Matilda actor said, revealing that the plans have nothing to do with Twins.
DeVito added: "No, it’s just two friends, two guys, because we have a good time together. We complement each other in a lot of ways. I am way stronger than he is."

Jada Pinkett Smith has said that she and Will Smith may get divorced in a decade's time after revealing that they've been secretly separated for seven years.
The actress has been making some startling revelations lately, all building up to the release of her new book, Worthy.
The 52-year-old has lifted the lid on her marriage with Will Smith, as she revealed that the pair have been secretly separated for seven years but aren't getting divorced.
Jada admitted to Today's Hoda Kotb that during the infamous slap at the Oscars, that was the first time she had heard Will refer to her as his wife in a long time.
This is the moment Will Smith slapped Chris Rock:"First of all, I’m really shocked, because mind you, I’m not there. We haven’t called each other husband and wife in a long time," she said.
When questioned about why they don't get divorced if they have been living separate lives, the answer is that they simply don't want to.
"We don’t want to because we love our family and we love each other," Jada said. "You know, it’s more of a life partnership. Now 10 years from now, Hoda? Who knows."
Jada said about their separation: "Why it fractured... that - that’s a lot of things... By the time we got to 2016, we were just exhausted with trying. I think we were both kind of just still stuck in our fantasy of what we thought the other person should be.
"I made a promise that there will never be a reason for us to get a divorce. We will work through... whatever. I just haven't been able to break that promise."
However, not everyone is sold by Jada and her confessions, as Ana Navarro expressed her thoughts during an episode of The View, where she explained that she thinks the 52-year-old is just trying to sell books.
"Listen, I think she's having a relationship with her bank account," Ana said. "Because every time she needs to increase the ratings of the Red Table, every time she needs to sell books, she drops these bombshells. I find it unseemly. Be careful of anybody who pretends to have a perfect marriage."
Other stars on the show including Joy Behar and Sunny Hostin defended Jada, as Sunny said: "It's a memoir, though, and she writes in her memoir that they've been separated for all of that time. I think it's a brave thing to do. I think it's a courageous thing to do. I think it has less to do with money. She has plenty."
Though it would seem that Ana wasn't deterred, as she questioned: "Why do I know so much about these people's marriage?"
She went on: "I kind of feel like I know more about their marriage than I know about my own damn marriage. I don't need to know all of this. You know what? I just want to watch reruns of Fresh Prince of Bel-Air and Bad Boys. Just leave this out of my head."

Sylvester Stallone has denied claims that he and his wife ended their 25-year marriage over a disagreement concerning his new dog.
On August 19, the 76-year-old Rocky actor's wife, Jennifer Flavin, reportedly filed a petition "for dissolution of marriage and other relief" in Florida.
Stallone has now come out against rumors that the divorce filing was caused by a series of arguments regarding his rottweiler, Dwight.
The actor told TMZ that he and the 54-year-old model didn't end their decades-long marriage "on such a trivial argument," and that they are both going in different directions.
Stallone continued that he has the "highest respect" for Flavin, adding: "I will always love her. She’s an amazing woman. She’s the nicest human being I’ve ever met."
The separation comes just days after The Expendables star covered up a tattoo of his wife’s portrait with one of his late dogs named Butkus.
The action led online users to believe that their relationship was in trouble, but Stallone’s representative told Daily Mail that he "intended to refresh the tattoo image of his wife" but the results were "unsatisfactory and, unfortunately, unfixable".
On Wednesday (August 24), the businesswoman described her filing for divorce from her husband as "sad", but said that both parties will move forward amicably.
In a statement to People, she said: "I’m sad to announce that after 25 years of marriage I have filed for divorce from my husband Sylvester Stallone."
"While we will no longer be married, I will always cherish the more than the 30-year relationship that we shared, and I know we are both committed to our beautiful daughters," she added. "I ask for privacy for our family as we amicably move forward."
The couple first began their relationship in 1988, when Flavin was 19 and Stallone was 42, and twice divorced. The pair then got married in 1997 and shared three daughters: Sophia, 25, Sistine, 24, and Scarlet, 20.
According to the Independent, court documents indicate that Flavin is also indicting Stallone for allegedly moving assets from their marital funds.
"Upon information and belief, the Husband has engaged in the intentional dissipation, depletion and/or waste of marital assets which has had an adverse economic impact on the marital estate," court documents stated.

Danny DeVito has revealed that after 35 years, he and Arnold Schwarzenegger will team up once again for a new movie.
The two actors have been rumored to be making a new film together after famously costarring as genetically engineered brothers Julius (Schwarzenegger) and Vincent (DeVito) Benedict in the classic 1988 comedy, Twins.
The core of the Ivan Reitman directional flick is about the contrast between the pair, with Julius being a street hustler while Vincent is raised by a scientist.
The movie grossed $111 million at the domestic box office upon its release and was the fifth highest-grossing film released that year, according to Box Office Mojo.
As it's been over three decades since the Hollywood stars have shared the screen, the 79-year-old It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia actor disclosed that a new project with Schwarzenegger is in the works.
"We’re working on something, a project that we’re going to do together, another movie," DeVito told CNN this week, adding that the friendship he shares with the 76-year-old bodybuilder predates the 1988 movie. "Arnold and I are good buddies. We met way before Twins, years ago," he said.
DeVito said the duo's new movie is currently being written. "We’re hoping that sooner than later, we’ll have a nice script to go to work," he told the outlet.

Speaking about the surprise appearance at the award show, Devito told CNN: "It’s just so much fun and we kept it a surprise as much as we could. We didn’t tell anybody and that was fun going out there and it was a big, good reception."

Amy Schumer and Chris Fischer have decided to end their marriage after more than seven years together.
The 44-year-old comedian broke the news in a candid Instagram post on Friday, December 12, sharing a snapshot of herself, Fischer, 45, and their son riding the New York City subway.
In typical Schumer fashion, her announcement was laced with humor, even in the midst of a serious update.
The star wrote: "Blah blah blah Chris and I have made the difficult decision to end our marriage after 7 years.
"We love each other very much and will continue to focus on raising our son. We would appreciate people respecting our privacy at this time. blah blah blah not becisse I dropped some lbs and thought I could bag s basket and not because he’s a hot Janlmes beard award winning chef who can still pull some hot tail. Amicable and all love and respect! Family forever."
While the announcement caught some fans off guard, sources close to the couple say there’s no drama behind the scenes.
"There's nothing ugly. It's a cohesive split. They've just been finalizing a few things," a source told PEOPLE.
Schumer and Fischer tied the knot in February 2018 after they were first romantically linked the year before. They welcomed their son, Gene, in May 2019.
Rumors about the state of their relationship had been circulating for weeks before Schumer confirmed the split. Back on November 13, a source told PEOPLE: “They’re privately working through normal issues that couples in long-term marriages have. They are both committed to the relationship.”
Just a week earlier, Schumer had posted to her Instagram Stories, sharing a shot of New York City while plugging Hulu’s legal drama All's Fair. She wrote at the time: "And Chris and I are still married."

Even earlier, on November 11, Schumer had removed all previous posts from her Instagram profile, including those featuring Fischer.
“I actually left my house tonight. Who’s proud? I’m feeling good and happy. Deleted my old pics for no reason!” she captioned a fresh upload.
Then, on December 1, she addressed the chatter about her marriage once again, this time while updating fans on her health journey.
“Whatever ends up happening with me and Chris has nothing to do with weight loss or autism,” she wrote, adding: “Fingers crossed we make it through. He’s the best.”
The former couple last appeared at an industry event together in June, when they attended the 2025 Tribeca Film Festival premiere of the documentary Room To Move.
