Matthew McConaughey's fans want him to run for President after the actor delivered his impassioned speech on gun control at the White House.
The Hollywood star travelled to the capitol to call for greater gun control in the wake of last month's school shooting, which took place in his Texas hometown Uvalde.
During the devastating attack, an 18-year-old gunman stormed Robb Elementary School with an AR-15 semi-automatic rifle, killing 19 children and two teachers.
McConaughey has taken an active role in responding to the shooting. After visiting the school site to pay his respect to victims' families, the Academy Award-winning star headed to the White House to speak on their behalf and push for greater con control legislation.
In an emotional address, he shared that he and his wife Camila had "spent most of last week on the ground in Uvalde, Texas," where they "shared stories, tears, and memories."
"The common thread, independent of the anger, confusion, and sadness, it was the same: how can these families continue to honor these deaths by keeping the dreams of these children and teachers alive. Again, how can the loss of these lives matter?" McConaughey said.
He went on to call for "responsible gun ownership", saying: "These regulations are not a step back, they're a step forward for a civil society and for the Second Amendment."
"This should not be a partisan issue," he added.
McConaughey's plea clearly struck a chord with many Americans. For some, his speech was so impressive that they think he should become a more permanent fixture in the White House.
"I would vote for Matthew McConaughey for president tomorrow," one person tweeted, while another agreed, writing: "Ok so here’s the plan we just take Matthew McConaughey and tell him he’s the president now."
"The White House would be better served if Matthew McConaughey delivered all of the briefings. He clearly speaks better than the President, Vice President and Press Secretary," added a third.
"I think Matthew McConaughey could be President if he wants. It’s time to Make America Alright Alright Again!" a fourth joked.
Others were less keen about the prospect of a Hollywood actor taking up residence in the Oval Office.
"We don't need another celebrity President, we need Universal: Housing, Healthcare, Food, Education, Transportation, Utilities, job opportunities & UBI," one person wrote.
"'He gave a powerful speech' is not a qualification for the White House," another tweeted, adding: "We can certainly praise Matthew McConaughey for giving a speech -- the guy is a very successful actor, giving a good speech seems squarely in the job description -- without being like, MAKE HIM PRESIDENT."
