Tommy Lee Jones' daughter Victoria Jones' cause of death revealed after she was found in San Francisco hotel room
More than a month after Victoria Jones was discovered dead inside a San Francisco hotel, officials have released new details about the circumstances surrounding her passing.
The 34-year-old daughter of Academy Award-winning actor Tommy Lee Jones was found in the early hours of January 1 after San Francisco Police and the San Francisco Fire Department responded to a reported medical emergency at 2:52AM, as both departments confirmed to PEOPLE.
When first responders arrived, they located a deceased individual who had not yet been publicly identified. It was later reported that the woman was believed to be Victoria.
Following her death, Victoria’s family shared a statement, which read: "We appreciate all of the kind words, thoughts, and prayers. Please respect our privacy during this difficult time. Thank you."
Emergency call details and medical findings
In dispatch audio obtained by the outlet, the call for the incident was classified as a "code 3 for the overdose, color change".
In overdose cases, "color change" refers to cyanosis, low oxygen levels in the blood often linked to heart or lung issues, per the Cleveland Clinic, which causes a blue or purple discoloration of skin, lips, and nails.
On Tuesday (February 17), the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in San Francisco, California, announced that Victoria had died due to "toxic effects of cocaine".
A spokesperson confirmed to USA TODAY that the finding was listed on the certified death certificate and that her death was determined to be accidental.
Acting career and personal history
Victoria was the younger child of Tommy Lee Jones and his ex-wife Kimberlea Cloughley. The former couple, who were married from 1981 to 1996, also share a son, Austin Jones, 43.
She made her film debut in her father’s 2002 movie Men in Black II, in which he reprised his role as Agent K.
Victoria is also credited as Immigrant Girl in The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada, a Western film, and appeared in an episode of One Tree Hill that same year.
Her additional credits include appearances in Sorry, Haters, and her dad’s 2014 movie The Homesman.
According to court dockets reviewed by PEOPLE, Victoria was arrested at least two times in the past year, including an arrest for drug possession.
Conservatorship proceedings drew renewed attention
In the wake of her death, attention has also turned to prior legal proceedings involving her father.
As reported by the San Francisco Chronicle on January 2, Marin County Superior Court records in California show the 79-year-old The Fugitive star successfully petitioned for the appointment of a conservator to oversee his daughter.
Tommy's petition, filed August 7, 2023, was approved later that month, per court records. On December 13, 2023, he submitted an application to end the temporary conservatorship. Days later, the petition was granted.
In a general conservatorship, a court can appoint a conservator for a person who is deemed unable to care for their own needs.
Their "conservator has all powers and responsibilities, except ones found unnecessary," per the California courts website.
