President Joe Biden was heard calling a reporter a "stupid son of a b****" through a live microphone on Monday, CNN reports.
The 79-year-old president had just given a White House Competition Council meeting on the cost of living crisis in the US when he made the remark.
While exiting the room, reporters continued to shout questions at Biden, prompting the president to make the profane comment targeted at Fox White House Correspondent Peter Doocy.
Watch the moment unfold below:"Would you take a question on inflation...? Do you think inflation is a political liability in the midterms?" Doocy asked the president.
Biden - seemingly unaware he would be heard - responded by sarcastically saying under his breath: "It's a great asset - more inflation. What a stupid son of a b****."
The president has since apologized for his scathing remark, Doocy claims. Late on Monday evening, the reporter said on Fox that Biden had rung his cell not long after the terse exchange.
"Within about an hour of that exchange, he called my cell phone and he said, 'It's nothing personal, pal,'" Doocy recalled.
The reporter also said that he told the president he would continue to ask him tough questions - to which Biden responded positively.
Doocy says didn't actually hear Biden's comment first-hand because it was so hectic in the East Room when he said it.
He relayed that other reporters "had to tell me that he said it because I couldn't hear anything over the shouting from (White House staff telling the press to leave the room)."
Meanwhile, this is not the first time the president has snapped at a reporter in recent days.
He responded just as scornfully to Jacqui Heinrich (another Fox White House correspondent) when she asked him why he was waiting for Russian President Vladimir Putin to make the first move in Ukraine.
"What a stupid question," Biden could be heard muttering under his breath.
It's also not the first time that Doocy's questioning has been labeled "stupid" by a top politician.
Back in 2017, republican senator John McCain had a withering response for the reporter when he asked about his "frayed" relationship with President Trump.
"Has your relationship with the President frayed to the point that you are not going to support anything that he comes to you and asks for?" Doocy asked.
McCain responded: "Why would you say something that stupid? Why would you ask something that dumb?"
