Jordan Peterson has publicly thanked Elon Musk for reactivating his Twitter account.
The notoriously controversial professor was previously removed from the platform after he made remarks about transgender actor Elliot Page, which many people deemed transphobic.
Referring to Page by his dead name, he also went on to attack the Umbrella Academy actor for his transition process writing: "Remember when pride was a sin? And [Elliot] Page just had [his] breasts removed by a criminal physician."
His tweet was deemed a violation of Twitter’s terms of service, so the 60-year-old's account was suspended but ready to be reactivated pending the removal of the harmful tweet.
Instead, Peterson chose to double down on it, stating that he would never delete the tweet and subsequently had his account permanently banned.
Per The Independent, Twitter stated that Peterson's tweet violated the platform's rules "against hateful conduct".
"You may not promote violence against, threaten, or harass other people on the basis of race, ethnicity, national origin, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity, religious affiliation, age, disability, or serious disease," it added.
Peterson recently became emotional following Olivia Wilde's criticism:But just a few months later, he announced his return to Twitter the only way he could - via an exhausted and slightly cringy joke.
"I'm back, thanks @elonmusk" he wrote alongside a photo of Jack Nicholson’s famous "here's Johnny" scene from The Shining.
He also later dedicated another post to Musk, accidentally referring to him as "Elen."
"Thanks Elen :) @elonmusk Really. Thank you sir," he said. "Probably best to reinstate Trump too. Let him do what he needs to do, and let the people decide. Right out in the open. Where such things should be decided."
Despite the reinstating of Peterson's account being met with backlash, there were some social media users who were pretty pleased about it.
"Welcome back. You have been missed but not forgotten," one Twitter user replied.
"This is why I chose to join twitter over any other platform. It's a privilege to hear Jordan Peterson's perspectives on a variety of vital issues, as is the possibility to meet any uncensored new idea. Welcome back sir," another user replied.
On Friday (Nov. 18) the Tesla CEO announced that he would be reinstating some controversial Twitter accounts that had previously been suspended on the social media platform.
Addressing the issue of "free speech" in a series of tweets, he said the following: "New Twitter policy is freedom of speech, but not freedom of reach. Negative/hate tweets will be max deboosted and demonetized, so no ads or other revenue to Twitter.
"You won’t find the tweet unless you specifically seek it out, which is no different from rest of Internet," he also added.
Alongside Peterson, comedian Kathy Griffin and conservative Christian news satire website Babylon Bee have also had their accounts reactivated - but Musk has said the decision to give former President of the United States Donald Trump his platform back is still pending review.
