A Los Angeles meteorologist was rushed to hospital this weekend after she terrifyingly collapsed live on air when the broadcast cut to the weather.

Alissa Carlson Schwartz had been due to present her segment on CBS Los Angeles at 7:00 AM on Saturday, however, when her co-anchors Nichelle Medina and Rachel Kim cut to her, she began feeling unwell.

As Medina tells the audience that it's the "calm before the storm", Carlson Schwartz's eyes begin to roll back in her head as she attempts to steady herself on the desk.

The weather presenter slumps forward before her legs appear to give way, and she falls backwards behind the desk.

Watch the terrifying moment below:

Medina and Kim did not initially appear to realize it was a medical emergency until Carlson Schwartz fell to the floor - initially seeming to think she was hanging her head due to the inclement weather on the horizon.

The pair quickly cut to a break once it became apparent that Carlson Schwartz had collapsed, and she was quickly tended to by medics.

According to reports by TMZ, the morning show did not return to a live segment following the on-air collapse, airing pre-recorded and promotional programming for several hours instead.

CBS Los Angeles' vice president and news director Mike Dello Stritto told the publication: "Our colleague Alissa Carlson became ill during our 7 AM newscast this morning.

"I want to thank her co-workers who took immediate action to comfort Alissa and call 911. Alissa is being treated at the hospital right now.

"Hopefully we’ll know more shortly. In the meantime, Alissa will be in our thoughts and we’re praying for her to be feeling much better soon."

Carlson Schwartz herself took to Facebook to reassure her friends and followers, thanking them for the "texts, calls, and well wishes" before adding: "I am going to be ok!"

The cause of her collapse is as yet unknown, however, TMZ reports that Carlson Schwartz experienced a similar episode in 2014 when she worked at another network.

The meteorologist vomited on set during a broadcast, which led to her being diagnosed with a leaky heart valve, which she was told would eventually need to be replaced.

However, months after having a baby, she revealed that she was told the stem cells from her pregnancy had actually started to heal the fault in the valve.

She had spoken about her heart valve issue to raise awareness of heart disease, which was the number one killer of Americans.

Carlson Schwartz and her family had also adopted an even healthier lifestyle as a result of her past medical issue and she had competed in a pageant to bring further awareness for others to also get their heart health checked.

Our thoughts are with Carlson Schwartz and wish her a speedy recovery.
