Bernie Sanders became a viral sensation in the wake of Joe Biden's inauguration, and a photograph of him sitting in a chair while wearing a coat and mittens was photoshopped into countless scenarios.
The 74-year-old has now revealed that he has personally seen some of the many mitten memes.
Senator Sanders made the revelation in an interview on Late Night with Seth Meyers, where he explained the thinking behind his popular fashion choice.
Revealing that he has indeed seen the many memes, Bernie told Seth: "I was just sitting there trying to keep warm, trying to pay attention to what was going on."
It's no wonder that Sanders wanted to keep warm too, with the National Weather Service predicting that the average temperature in Washington D.C. at noon on January 20 was to be about 37 degrees.
In the video below, Bernie declares victory in New Hampshire:Bernie went on to explain that the mittens were made by a Vermont teacher, who has been overwhelmed by the attention they've received.
Sanders continued: "What was really nice, Seth, is the woman who made the mittens, she is a schoolteacher [and] is a very, very nice person.
"And she's been somewhat overwhelmed by the kind of attention that is being shown to her mittens."
Alongside a picture of the now-famous mittens, Ellis, the teacher, wrote in a tweet last year: "I made Bernie’s mittens as a gift a couple [of] years ago. They are made from repurposed wool sweaters and lined with fleece (made from recycled plastic bottles). #BerniesMittens."
However, Bernie was not the only recipient of Ellis's mittens.
Seven Days, a Vermont publication, reports that Ellis's daughter's daycare is run by Bernie's daughter-in-law, Liza Driscoll, and Ellis made a pair of the warm-looking gloves for all of the teachers there too.

But while Bernie was doing his best to stay warm, Bill Clinton appeared to have no issue with the temperature, and footage and pictures emerged online of the former president appearing to sleep during the ceremony.
One Twitter user shared an image of Bill appearing to sleep, writing: "Bill Clinton has fallen asleep."
A second added: "They zooming in on Bill Clinton sleep, like he doesn't always be sleeping… the man old."
A third shared a video of Bill seemingly struggling to keep his eyes open that was captioned: "bill clinton is really asleep rn."
Hilary Clinton, meanwhile, was busy befriending the inauguration poet, who revealed that she too plans to run for president one day.
